Group B Strep.

I am 9 weeks pregnant and my urine tested positive for GBS. I was also positive with my previous pregnancy. With that one I was prescribed antibiotics for 10 days and as a result I got a thrush infection in my mouth. I went to the doctor for it and that doctor told me he didn't understand why I was given the antibiotics because I was so early in my pregnancy and the bacteria would still be there no matter what and I still received antibiotics during labor. So my question is, if other mothers that also tested positive weren't given antibiotics early in pregnancy? If I don't have to take them, I'd rather not, to avoid another painful thrush infection or possible yeast infection.

I tested positive as well it showed up in my urine and they put me on antibiotics because it also showed I had a bladder infection

I was tested at 36 weeks with the cotton swab. I wasn't given any antibiotics. I was told I would get antibiotics through IV at hospital when labor started and would receive antibiotics every 3-4 hours during labor. That's it.

It just came up in my urine test at my first prenatal appointment, same as my first pregnancy. I was never swabbed since it was found in my urine.

Well I'm on baby number 4 and I've never been checked before 36 weeks for it and I've never heard of being tested early unless you went into preterm labor. I just wasn't sure if there was something wrong to make them test for it sooner

I'm going to call my doctor tomorrow and ask why it was prescribed and if I can not take it. I know it only is possible to pass the the baby during birth and it isn't harmful to us, but can be to the baby, I was just curious if other mothers had the same thing happen to them.

N that's y they test u early so u can have a birthing plan n when u go in labor they can order it. Bcuz it can cause defects n infections in ur baby. So it makes sense to know early so u can get the antibiotics

I had one daughter at 37 weeks and one on her due date with group b strep. My dr never told me it caused early labor and I've never had a bladder infection or a uti in my life. The antibiotics aren't going to do anything really. Its a bacteria that lives in you and is completely harmless to us. It can only make the baby sick passing through the birth canal

My first pregnancy I was going to a military hospital. I know that they can be a little prescription happy with their patients so I thought that's why I was given the antibiotics. This pregnancy I am going to a very nice civilian obstetrics office. It was prescribed again so it makes me wonder if there is a reason for it.

I know, that's why I haven't started the medication yet. It kind of seems Ile it's just protocol to prescribe antibiotics when it's detected. It was found in my urine with my first pregnancy also. I was never swabbed because it was found in my urine and I got the IV antibiotics. I can't find anything about not taking antibiotics in the beginning if it is found. I just want to do what's right for my baby. I read it can cause early labor.

I have never been proscribed anything during pregnancy. It's when u give birth that when they give u the 2 bags of IV n u stay an extra day because the baby have to b monitored.  I had it with my two girls not my first son. I never had a n ladder infection or a uti

It's a normal bacteria that lives in the vagina and rectum. I haven't heard of it causing infections. It's harmless to us.

I tested positive with 2 of my 3 pregnancies but they didn't test me until 36 weeks and i got iv antibiotics during labor. I've never been tested early on. I wonder why they would even test you because it doesn't even matter if you have it early in pregnancy it only matters if you have it when the baby passes through the birth canal

That's what I thought. The only thing I have read is that it can cause a bladder infection or UTI, so maybe that's why it was prescribed? It was found in my urine, I wasn't swabbed for it yet. I feel fine though. No symptoms of an infection or UTI. I really don't like taking medicine if it isn't necessary.

It does no good to take them early in as it can always return. It's best to just be given the antibiotics during labor.
