How dilated is considered active labor?

So I'm 80% thinned out and 4 cm dialted. Baby is set in place and ready to go. 38 weeks with serious swelling in my feet knees and wrists. How far dialted must one be to be considered in active labor?

I always thought 4 cm you got admitted but I'm seeing more amd more get sent home at even 6cm so I am assuming thr above poster is correct in her thinking.

I'm assuming it depends on 1) if your water breaks or 2) how far apart your contractions are. Both my kids my contractions were consistent and my water broke.
