I'm in my first trimester

I am a very active person, I workout 5 days a week. Is it okay to do sit ups as part of my workout routine?

I've always been really active too and questioned all those things myself.  Over the years, I've read both opinions and what a lot of it comes down to is what your body can handle.  Those core muscles are awesome during labor and muscle memory will help your body bounce back afterwards.  When I got pregnant with my 2nd, doc said I could still play inline hockey as long as I wasn't falling or having any pain or issues.  During 3, 4, and now this one I teach phys ed and have always kept whatever workouts and sports the same during 1st trimester as when I'm not pregnant.  Around 2nd and 3rd trimester especially, your body starts to limit you a bit and lying on your back to do crunches just plain feels bad.  Instead small crunches on the ball and plank holds are good, and then just simple easy stretched towards the end, because by then getting up from a chair is workout as it is!  I like slow lunges too, as the weight starts to add on.....squats not so much :)

From what I have read it is okay to do them in the first trimester. After that it is reccomended that you find something else to do.

My DR's rule has always been to avoid anything that works the core. So I would stay away from them. You can check in with your dr as to what their policy is on that though. Congrats on the new baby. :)
