Is melatonin safe to take?

I am 26 weeks pregnant and I was wondering if melatonin is safe to take. Sleeping is starting to get tough.

Just because its natural doesn't mean safe. It has not been studied in pregnant women and has no safety rating. I would strongly suggest speaking with your Dr first. Especially seeing as everywhere I've read agrees that it is contraindicated for use in pregnant women.

My Dr and midwife have both had me taking melatonin during my pregnancy and recommend it over benadryl or any other sleep aid :) I take some a few hours before bed otherwise I wake up still groggy in the morning.

Melatonin is not safe to take during pregnancy. I have been taking it in cycles for a couple years for cluster headache prevention and both my OB and my neurologist said not to take it... If you are having trouble sleeping you can take Unisom, Benadryl, or Zzzquil.
