I'm 36 weeks and I use to lay on my back in the beginning of my pregnancy. Now it just hurts from all the weight and I wake up with a lower back ache

My midwife told me that's stupid and to do what makes you feel good. It might be better to sleep on the (left) side but to completely avoid one position for months and months can make ypu suffer more once you get bigger because no position feels comfortable and when your back starts to hurt you won't need one restriction more. Anyways, I never heard it where I live (and lived through my pregnancy in three different countries) and when I asked to my doctors no one thought that was a big deal. Actually, we did some yoga exercises in a hospital which I stopped doing it includes laying on the back. When they were teaching us that I felt stupid for even stopping and following that many restrictions while my body was completely comfortable by doing it.

That's funny...I was just Googling this about 20 minutes ago. From what I've read on numerous websites, they all say to stop laying on your right at 16 weeks. Alid32 is right... When you lay on your back after that time, it cuts the blood flow to you & your baby. Sleeping on either side is fine, but they say it's best to sleep on your left side.

You are supposed to stop laying on your back starting in the second trimester.  The weight of the growing uterus presses the the large vein that carries the blood from your lower extremities back to your heart. The pressure can cause dizziness and also can cause decreased blood flow to the placenta (which mean less oxygen and nutrients to your baby). If you prop pillows under your back so you are at an angle it's okay. Sleeping on your left side optimizes circulation that benefits both you and baby. Right side is okay too.
