Pros/Cons of inducing?

I'm almost 38w and my family and friends have been non stop asking me if I'm going to induce. I've heard really bad stories about it, and I've heard good ones.

I personal don't want to induce. I want him to come on his own, but I am so swollen and my blood pressure has been all over the place lately. I feel like maybe inducing would be better for my health.

Should I bring this up to my doctor? And how do you guys feel about inducing? If you were induced, how was it?

I was induced with my daughter due to pre-eclampsia. I have asked to be induced again due to the fact I have a 20 month old daughter I need to have plans for and I also run an in-home daycare. Dont need to go into labor and have to wait on all the moms to pick up their kids. Lol so yes, you can asked to be induced. Some drs will some wont. I dont feel you should ask to be induced if you dont have any legitament reasons. Dont let your family pressure you! But if your health is at risk, definitely talk to your doctor about your options.   :) good luck!

The doctor usually will recommend this is you have high blood pressure, preclampsia or any other issues..I was induced besides the pain came harder and quicker everything went well and actually benefitted my baby he went poo inside and they had to break my water for me so if they didn't he would of had a higher risk of getting sick,it wouldn't hurt to talk to your doctor about it and she what they think..;) good luck

I didnt realize you coukd ask for this... I thought it was for medical necessity?  If baby needs to come bc of health reasons that is one thing but not for scheduling... I've delivered naturally twice and it is hard but you do what is best for you and your baby.

What were some of the self inducing things you did? I have been bouncing on a yoga ball. I went from not being dilated or thinned to being dilated to 3cm in 4 days.

I'd try self inducing first. That's what I did

Thank you ladies. I'm going to go over with the doc about some natural options that I can start doing because of my blood pressure and swelling. Or see if inducing is necessary at all.

Bah humbug. This is stressful. Lol

I have only been induced. Both of them have gone really well.  I'm on number 3 now and I don't plan on inducing this time but I'm totally ok if I need to again.

I would ask for a membrane sweep.  don't let family pressure you into anything you aren't comfortable with. Inducing is the first step on a slippery slope. If baby isn't ready (you could go to 42+ weeks) inducing will lead to a c-section. I was induced for 2 days and then forced into an unnecessary c-section because baby didn't come on the doctors schedule. I'm 9 weeks pregnant planning a vbac now. If you are planning a natural birth, pitocin will make the pains much worse, and may end up dropping baby's heart rate, which would also lead to a c-section. I highly recommend a membrane sweep, and tell family that baby will come when he/she is good and ready!

I don't want an epidural either. I wanted it to be all natural, but I seriously have my family breathing down my neck to make an induction date that corresponds with their schedule. :/

I don't feel like he's ready and I'm only 37w+5. Which I learned last appointment isn't full term.

Could I ask my doctor for a membrane sweep? I am 3cm dilated. And I feel like that's safer than inducing.

My inductions were much harder than my natural labor and I plan to avoid induction at all costs this time around.  That being said, if you know you are going to have an epidural, you won't feel much difference. I got the spinal headache after the epidural and was miserable.  If you are having health issues, it may be time for baby to come out. Do what is best for you and your little one. The one thing I wish someone had told me before I had my first is the moment you think you can't take any more, you are almost done. Good luck in whatever decision you make.
