Testing

So my cousin carries the gene for Cystic Fibrosis, her daughter has it. Am thinking I should be tested... my mom says the less testing I do the better off I'll be. I honestly want to do the testing but am afraid of what my mom will think... any advice?

I turned down every test that attempted to detect some 'anomaly' in my son. My husband and I decided going in that nothing would make us terminate the pregnancy so why worry. If you want the testing, do it. Just be sure you know why you are doing it on a base level. And know that drs can be wrong either way. This is your pregnancy, not your mothers. I'm sure she went against some advice given to her when she was pregnant ;)

The downs test is normally done by a blood test and I would just get the CF testing done to ease the mind and know for future reference.

What do they do for down's test? I know the chances, but with my cousin having the gene we aren't sure which of her family i came from, my aaunt's or her dad. We've no clue if my husband carries it.

I didn't know it was as simple as a swab in mouth..
if its that simple and you want to test then do it.. :)

I thought it was needles or something to baby. ..
My daughter had sweat test at about 12weeks old so I just know thats easy

Your baby is only at risk if both the father and mother carry the gene for CF. And if you both carry the gene the baby has a 25% chance of actually having the disease. So if the father doesn't carry the CF gene then you have nothing to worry about.

It's not the ease of the test her mom was talking about. I deny any test that is not needed for my or my baby's health. I get the glucose tests and similar, I do not get downs test and similar. I will not change my mind on my pregnancy no matter what the out come of a test, so I do not get tests for things I can not change or control. If there is nothing you can do for your baby now to help then there is no reason to cause extra stress during pregnancy by doing the tests now.

We chose not to do the downs test. We plan on keeping the baby no matter what so why have the extra worry on top of everything else. I handle things better as they come. If I have to dwell on a problem I get uber stressed out. Baby doesn't need it.

It took doctors a long time to figure out what was wrong with my second cousin. If there is a 25% chance for our baby we would b better off knowing. Are there any tests some chose not to do?

I wouldn't bother and just have a sweat test done on your baby after birth ...
its so easy to do - it won't make a difference now will it?

you could do it if it makes you feel better. Your mom doesn't need to know you have done it unless you decide to share the results with her

Your mom is right. Some tests will just have you worry for no reason.

I think you should do the test just to give you peace of mind.. in the end it's your baby..I did most of the test with my 2nd child and he was just fine.
