Views on Quad Screen testing?

Who had this done, or did not have it done? Do they just run a blood test? I think I'm going to not have it done, I will love my child developmentally challenged or not. What are your opinions?

I did the Quad screen and the results came back 1:120 for downs then I had a targeted ultrasound and she looked great so that made the odds 1:240. My husband and I didn't want to risk the amnio or CVS so we had the Mat21 test. Its noninvasive and is over 99% accurate and they can even tell u the gender BC the get samples of the babies DNA. I was worried for 10 days until the results came back . No downs! Thank God! I do not think that I would ever take a guess work screening test again not when other diagnostic tests are available that can give you a true answer and are totally safe for the baby. I have heard and read abt so many cases of quad screen worry and false positives (the results wrongly coming back increased risk). I do not know how much money we are gonna have to pay for those screens BC my ins company does not cover them at all. But the whole experience made my faith in god stronger , so I am not resentful at all .God is good and he answers prayers!

I opt out too. The results wont matter to us anyway. And no matter what, there is no sense of preparation for what they say. My friend had one with her last baby and found out there was an abnormality. She opted to wait and see and then slowly lost the baby at 21 weeks. But it was miserable for her, whereas if it had just happened without knowing, she would've felt better.

My sil had one done with her last one and got a high chance of down ( sorry can't remember the exact results) but she had to see a specialist and get an amnio and her insurance didn't cover it and wound up having a healthy baby and got a big bill out of the deal. I personally opted out.

I just had it done on tuesday.I wanted the extra u/s. Got to see my lil one again. Baby wasn't cooperating though so the tech sent me for a walk and snack to see if baby changed position. Came back an hour later and baby still wasnt in right position so I got 2 sono scans and bloodwork and tech made a note that baby wasn't in right position. Wonder how that's going to affect their feedback.

I'm already high risk under supervision so I don't think I need any added attention, but I'll love this baby no matter what is or isn't wrong with him/her

I did with my first and was one that was freaked out. They had my dates wrong. They were saying I was 3 weeks further than what I truly was so when I did the quad it said I had a 1/97 ratio for Downs. I had to go do a special ultrasound where they showed he was healthy and that I was 16 weeks and not 19 weeks.

With this baby I said nope I'm not doing it so whatever happens happens I will live my child even If they are special. What's a defect anyway.

I agree this doesn't hurt the baby just ultrasound and blood test. I had it done for my last daughter in 2011 because my daughter born in 2004 was born with spina bifida. I'm glad I had it because I found out she was healthy and I didn't need to worry :)

it doesn't hurt baby, the just give you a ultrasound and prick your finger and put it on 5 dots :) its just to see if baby has anything out of normal basically they look at the head(to make sure there's 2 sides and a crease) and listen too the heart and check to see if you have 3 tubes in the baby's cord(some people only have 2). and its actually good to get done because if something actually is wrong they will give the baby more attention and the problems can sometimes be fixed. they tell you that you can choose to do the extensive one but I refused that one, I found it was unnecessary but the regular gives you some peace of mind, and a ultrasound :) win win you get too see your baby and get some ultrasound pics

Yes and with CVS and amniocentesis your risk for miscarriage increases CVS Is 1 in 200 and a amniocentesis is 1 in 300 its just not worth it to me

A lot of people don't seem to understand what exactly the test means. There are no false positives or negatives because the test doesn't give you a definite positive or negative. What it does is say if you have an increased chance of your baby having a birth defect. After the test if it says you are at increased risk then you have the choice to have an amniocentesis done and that will give you a definite result. For example my SIL had the quad screen done and the results came back that the odds for down syndrome were 1 in 120, then they did her anatomy scan and saw a heart defect which increased the odds to 1 in 10. She then decided to go ahead and have the amniocentesis done and after a two week wait for the results she received the prenatal diagnosis that her daughter did have down syndrome.

I personally haven't had it done with any of my 3 pregnancies because I was still going to have my baby regardless. Some people though like my SIL decide to have it done because even though they plan to continue the pregnancy they like to be prepared.

I totally agree with you and did not have it done myself. I have had 2 friends get false positive readings and spent weeks with unneeded stress.  like you said i will.love my child either way and felt no need to stress and worry about what God has planned for me and my child.

I wont have it done.  Not only will it not change how I deal with my pregnancy, there are so many false positives that just freak people out.
