WIC

I have an appointment on Monday to get on the wic program. What exactly do they provide? I was told by a friend to apply and I'm not exactly sure what they supply. I mainly am doing it for a breast pump.

I live in NY and had it when I was pregnant with my son and until he was 5 years old. It was amazing because I only breastfed him for 6 weeks and formula is crazy expensive and thy gave me most of the formula I needed. Every month I had to buy prob one can but it saved me tons! Plus I love kix cereal and that's one of the cereals they give you. They were very strict about some things back then tho, like I couldn't get strong cheese. It could be cut and individually wrapped like that or like Kraft singles American cheese. Just cheese blocks. But it may be different now, it's many years later. I'll find out cuz I have my first appt for the pregnancy on Friday ;)

Exsctly what you get depends on the state you live in. I went and got week as soon as the dr confirmed i was pregnant. I get fruits and veggies, bread, cheese, juice, beans, peanut butter, and a ton of milk each month and they will add to it when the baby is born. Its very helpful

In  my state I was on it till my daughter turned 1 because I was still nursing her. Once you have baby they give you more also and add in 6 cans of tuna each month. I started getting checks for my daughter I think when she was 7 months because I didn't use formula. But they do a ton of baby food.  Enough for 1 meat fruit and veggie a day.. Plus baby cereal. I'm aloud to get any brand I want of anything as long as it's not organic.

I Dont know what state youre in but in texas on wic there not gonna give you a breast pump until your baby is 6wks because they like for you to nurse.  And there breast pumps aren't  the best, I had one and it pumped really slow and wasn't very good, so I would suggest trying to save up just in case you have to buy one

It's based off income and household size. You have to call your local wic office to get an appointment. If you have Medicaid you already qualify.

Stacie725, I am also picky.. with the cereal I get honey bunches of oats with almond, the cheese we get string cheese, and of course all the milk and eggs. I usually don't eat any of it... and my husband and daughter do... as far as peanut butter goes... I dont eat peanut butter so hubby eats that too...

This may sound a little stuck up, but I am picky about certain foods I eat and around here we are limited to certain cereals, cheese, milk, ect all off brand products. Somethings I can deal with but somethings I just can't stomach the brands they allow u to get. Then there are vertain store that accept it but have some many rules, like u have to get cereal in a specific oz.. its just not what i am use too. I mean I appreciate that they have programs like that and I will always support them because people need to the food they give. So its doesn't go to waste we drink the1% milk ansd my mother doesn't mind eat the other thing they provide.

I just used some of my wic checks earlier today.... I got milk, eggs, cheese, peanut butter, juice, cereal, and fruits... the quantity that you get depends on how many people in the home are on wic... I have a 3.5 year old daughter and I'm pregnant.. so we get 7 gallons of milk, 4 boxes of cereal, $16 worth of fruits/veggies, 2 cans of peanut butter, 4 packages of whole grains (I usually get whole wheat tortillas), 2 16oz of cheese, 4 64oz. Of juice, 2 doz. Eggs, and 4 cans of beans... when the baby is born ill get that plus start getting formula at 2 months (I'll start supplementing... women stay on the program while they are pregnant and if they BF the time the BF or up until 6 months after they give birth... children can stay up to 5 years old... I really only wanted it for the formula

Yes basically all that was said above plus cheese cereal peanut butter dry beans.. It really is probably one if the best programs I think. You do have to ask to borrow a pump tho as they don't just offer them. At least that's how it is on my state. They also do breastfeeding classes

They supply milk, eggs, bread, juice and if your not breastfeeding, formula and baby foods when the baby gets older. I find it very helpful :)
