test for down syndrome

I received a call from my doctor a few days ago. He advised me that the test came back negative but number was high. What does that mean? He told me not to worry nor loose sleep because it was negative. He said it was up to me to do more testing but insurance will not cover. Is this just more of a money maker? Are these test even accurate?

I only got the blood test one done due to my family history when it comes to downs and health issues that come with it sometimes but it came back no risk but still prepared just in case cause my moms when she was pregnant with my brother moses showed no risk and nothing on ultrasounds made doctors concerned about  it but he came out with downs but up to you if you get the more invasive test no judgement here for me ur was a preparedness thing cause I have a family history of it . and I do understand some women don't wanna know if at risk are prepared no matter what results or test done or not. They leave it to (faith) not judging them either everyone prepares/handles goes about things differently no matter what it involves in life.

what test did they administer? I.took the harmony test because my baby had cysts on his brain. My numbers are 1 in 10,000 im not really clear what that means either. but either way the baby will still be loved

I was told by my Dr that they do the ultrasound and blood test to get a risk factor. Mine was 1 in 7300 which produced a negative result and was not offered further testing.

If u do further testing they do stuff more invasive like the needle but I was told its almost 100% accurate and Ull know for sure.

However you spell that crap?! LOL nice touch... I wasn't trying to be offensive I was just stated that not everyone "has faith" I personally do not believe in a god...I also work in the medical field and I can tell you that the Drs see little to no money from the tests you pay for. Like I said they are obligated, by law, to offer them to you but you aren't required to have them. P.s. nobody says "no duh" anymore

How far along are you? I had the quad screening done at 18weeks but that's not a yes or no, just a number. My doctor didn't even give me my numbers (well not yet  anyway) the office just called and saidwwas normal. If it would of been high, I would of had further testing (not an amniocentesis) just further blood work and only to prepare myself for labor and delivery BC my hospital does not have a nicu or DS specialists. BUT......they will be able to tell you if your baby has markers of downs during your anatomy scan. I would of waited for both to come back with yes's before further testing. Its a personal choice and shouldn't be judged either way, do what you feel is right for you :)

Faith is not science. The tests for downs syndrome do have a false positive rate of about 5-10%. They are for your benefit and not a money making scheme. The teats usually go on a scale of low risk, moderate risk, and high risk. They start with these tests because they are the least invasive and usually if you come back moderate risk to high risk your Dr will suggest more testing. You don't have to do it but by law your Dr has to offer it to you. There are other tests that they can do before an amniocentesis (the big needle). However an amnio is one of few ways to get a pretty definite yes or no. The risk associated with an amnio is the possibility of miscarriage which occurs in about 1 out of every 800 or so women. Do your research and if it doesn't matter to you then don't test any further. I personally would want to know just so that I could be prepared.

I didn't have any of that testing done due to it not always being accurate. I didn't want any added stress if something came back abnormal. When they did my ultrasound at 20 weeks the tech had different things she looked for and one of those was the nose development. There's certain things they can see that could give you more answers. I wouldnt pay for extra testing. At your next ultrasound ask the tech to check for the spacing around the nose and lips to check if anything could be different. Don't worry yourself too much. Everything will be okay :) good luck!

They just want your money. I do not agree with those down syndrome test I think they make the situation worse. I don't trust every test they give . If they offer me to test my baby for down syndrome and the shot has to be given in the stomach I will not have it. Don't do .
