breast pumps

Hi moms. I am going to be a stay at home mom and I want to breastfeed. Im not too comfortable with breastfeeding in public so I would need to pump for outings. I also would like to pump bottles to allow others to feed the baby. Ive started shopping around for breast pumps and im so lost. Single? Double? Electric? Manuel?  What do you moms recommend? Any specific things I should look for while making my choice.

Before you spend a ton of money on a good breast pump. Call your insurance company. They usually provide you with one. I plan on doing the same and my insurance company provides a pump.

I'd suggest giving yourself the opportunity to learn to feel comfortable nursing in public. If a cover would make you feel better, go ahead and buy one. Practice at home for a while but don't entirely rule out the possibility that you might feel much better about it once you get the hang of it - honestly it's SOOOO much easier than pumping and properly storing milk to have ready when you're out and about. I will say honestly that in the two years I nursed my son, wherever and whenever he needed me, I never once had anyone make nasty comments or harass me about it. I never used a cover and I never felt super exposed - I didn't "let it all hang out", it's just a matter of finding ways to make it work. Just my two cents - I didn't think I'd be so comfortable but it was really smoother and more natural than I expected.
As for pumps I used a Medela manual when I was at work and expressed plenty that way. But I don't know too many people who have been successful with something so small.

I just reordered a breast pump last night but this time I got the single one. That way I can breastfeed baby on one side and pump the other or alternate between feedings (at night).... I had a double electric and was going to get another, but being I have two toddlers, I need a free hand at all times around here. It gets crazy lol

But, I agree... Check with your insurance to see if they cover or at least decrease the price of a pump. I tried that but for myself, I would come out better just buying mine. I don't mind though :)

I got the Medela double electric from my insurance completely covered.  I had one with my first 8 years ago but wanted a new one since that one has been through 4 kids.

Check with your insurance. Most now days cover breast pumps. Mine has quite a few options to choose from and it gets covered 100percent

Double electric for sure. For the first month avoid using the pump just to make sure your body gets used to supplying milk. Some moms, not all, don't produce as much with a pump especially if they start too early with it. Sometimes the baby needs to be on the breast for hours a day the first month to stimulate milk production. Breastfeeding on demand during growth spurts will help keep supply up too.

I had the first years double electric pump with my second daughter...but the one I really like is the Medela very nice, but also pricey. The first years pump was only about $70 at Target 3 and a half years ago.

I would get a double electric since it's faster.
