I use a sonicare, but that doesn't help. I did however have my 6 month cleaning last week. My dentist said to brush with water only. The only reason you need to use toothpaste is for the fluoride, so you can rub some toothpaste on your teeth after you brush and rinse it off. This really works... only thing that works for me actually. Otherwise I have to brush in an empty stomach.

I have that problem!
it got a little better when i switched to a sonicare electric tooth brush (even through it takes longer 2 min cycle) it think it is because the brush head is smaller and doesn't take much tooth paste. It does get my teeth super clean which males me feel much better afterwards.
i also let myself drool over the sink occasionally while brushing, but i feel better when i stay standing up straight. so i do a quick spit/drool and straigten back up.

Yes! Nothing seems to help. I now sit down to do it, hahaha.
