contractions?

Hello ladys im 39 weeks today i was wondering is it possible to start getting contractions before water breaks..? Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question first timer here. Ive startes for an hour now cramps on and my stomach feels tight then normal hope that makes sence am i experiencing bad braxton hicks? Could it be the start of labor? Help!!

Thank you for answering yeah they were just false one there simmering down already aww man :\ i still have 7 days to go im just hoping she comes on her own and i don't have to get induced. And ahh i know this is your second baby but are you nervous for baby number 2?

Yes contractions can start before water breaks. I've experienced Braxton Hicks contractions that have lasted hours every 5 - 10 minutes but never increasing in intensity or becoming labor.  With my first it wasn't until I was induced 11 days past due date that I felt a real contraction, and tomorrow is my due date with #2 and only Braxton Hicks so far.....when it's the real thing you won't be able to talk during a contraction and eventually your water will break.  You'll know.
