If you and baby are at a healthy state (baby is large enough and developed) MOST doctors will not stop your natural labor at 37 weeks. However, if you are both healthy and have NOT gone into labor on your own yet, a doctor will not induce you until after 39 weeks. It depends on your doctor and how your pregnancy is going.
My ob considers 39 weeks full term but will not stop labor after 37 weeks.
My little one came all on her own at 37 weeks and they considered her full term. That was 2 years ago though!
For my doctor it's 39 weeks.
37 weeks is early term.
39 weeks is full term.
The ACOG and the March of Dimes have changed their recommendations to reflect this because of abundant research showing that elective early inductions (before 39 weeks, and not because of medical necessity) result in statistically significantly poorer outcomes for babies.
Many doctors don't keep up with the research and continue to give their patients outdated information. Makes me wonder what else they don't know.
The new pediatric and neonatal studies have suggested making 39 weeks full term. Many doctors will still tell you that you're full term at 37 weeks.
