I was in so much pain having my contractions that I didnt even feel the epidural going in! And then it felt like cool water running up my spine and relaxed me immediately. .I didnt feel like the exorcist anymore either haha. My sister and friend has had pethidine and both have said they hated it as it made them feel weird and paranoid. Im going for a water birth this time..if the pains too much I will get out and maybe have an epidural. Goodluck :)

I'm reading the book Natural Childbirth The Bradley Method. This book offers alternative techniques to manage your pain. Laughing gas, iv pain meds, are other alternatives to an epidural. Epidurals may block the pain but labor is harder and longer. The mother has no control over her lower extremities. She can not feel when to push. The doctor may end up having to assist the child out with forceps our other methods. You can Google natural child birth techniques and even find some on you tube if you don't want to read the book. Best of luck to you.

I had one with my first child and didn't feel a thing. I had instant relief from contractions and no problems afterward.  I will be getting another one for this baby too.

Yes I remember my epidural with my first child I tried to go without but contractions were so painful I couldn't take it. The worst part was they make you wait until you get a contraction to administer it. Ugh painful and scary bc you can't move bc they can paralyze you. I got spinal blocks for all my others but I had c sections. But either way the pain of the needle is way better than the contractions.

It really only worked in half of my body in my second pregnancy, and my third the anesthesiologist was in surgery so I got a spinal before delivery, but it wore off. :) I agree with the no drugs comment as well. They make you feel drowsy and loopy and do nothing for the pain.

I've had an epidural with all 5 of my pregnancies an never felt any pain with any of them they numb the area first. Only the first one actually worked for me, cuz I've got scar tissue built up due to accidents, but I still tried them the other 4 times hoping it would work but no luck. No other pain meds will do anything to help you trust me. Go with the epidural it did not hurt, you honestly don't even feel it as they are doing it atleast I haven't. Good luck hun

Heck no! Contractions hurt so bad in active labor that the little poke in your back feels like welcome relief. :)

I seriously didn't feel when they put it in, just pressure. They give you a numbing shot before inserting it. Wasn't bad at all! I'll be requesting it again with this baby :)

I have 2 kids and had an epidural with both.  I tried to go without it with my second but I couldn't do it.  I have a really high pain tolerance but I'd rather have a second of pain versus hours of pain stretching across my back and round my body!  Now your backing will be sore for a few days after the epidural but that's normal.

It hurt while getting it but it was worth it in my opinion.    I was induced and tried to make it without it but I only made it about 4 hours.   My doctor told me it would slow down labor but for me it made it faster.

Im a ftm I have heard many different stories.  One of my cousin's regrets getting it because her back is messed up it hurts all the time. It helps you to not feel the pain as much as going all natural.  Personally,  im scared to get it so I'm going all natural...my other cousin went natural and she said what helped her was when she knew she was getting strong contractions she laughed about it and ignore the pain by acting silly and just bust out laughing  I know it sounds silly but she was able to give birth without the epidural because of that.
