exercise during pregnancy

I'm a first time mom and am 9 weeks. I am overweight, since before the baby of course. I originally planned to lose weight before getting pregnant but our blessing happened sooner than planned. I will be discussing exercise with my obgyn at my next appointment but i wanted to know what kind of exercise so you ladies doing to keep healthy doing pregnancy? Is there such thing as dieting during pregnancy (counting calories, not starving oneself dangerously)? Please be kind and share your experiences :)

I lost 2.5 stone before I found out I was pregnant on no. 4 and have managed to only put a stone back on..I am now 37 weeks.....I had been eating paleo..but when I found out I was pregnant I started to re-introduce a few bits like dairy grains and pastas.
I also walk everywhere,  I dont drive, walking is the best and its free....start off with 15 mins at an easy pace in ine direction and then 15 mins back, slowly upping the time as you feel more comfortable with your pace.
swimming is great as well and I found for myself cycling was great.

But if u are on a budget..walking is the best thing and your eating habits should just be lots of fresh meat and veg/fruit if you can....try and stay away from lots of processed foods and sauces and especially those dreaded fizzy drinks...so so bad..

Best of luck and congrats x

I would walk at whatever pace u feel comfortable walking at.I too wanted to loose weight before I got pregnant but that didn't happen. I tried to walk 30-45 mins at least 4 days a week. The further along I got the slower my walking was but I still walked. The most important thing is that u keep moving.good luck girl!

Great suggestions, however i am not in the financial position right now for a personal trainer. What recommendation would you both have to start walking? How long, what pace?

Talk to your doctor. Walking, swimming, and yoga are great options, but it is possible to start new fitness routines with the approval of your doctor, and the right trainer. It's important that you don't push too hard, and listen to your body. As far as diet choose lean meats, and lots of veggies with some fruit. Drink lots of water.

As far as exercise, we can keep doing what we already were doing but its the wrong time to pick up new fitness regimines. You can go for regular walks or swims or so prenatal yoga I'd you haven't exercised before but that's about it. As far as food, you can always start making healthier choices. The more balanced nutrients you get ever day the healthier you and baby will be. In 2nd trimester you need about 300 more calories than normal and 3rd trimester about 450 more. Most women need about 1800 to 2000 on a daily basis for regular maintenance, so use that as a baseline. Take prenatals every day. Add a little extra calcium if you can (think yougurt maybe.) And eat tons of fruits and vegetables to stay hydrated and healthy. You're going to find you probably want to eat about every 2 hours to avoid hunger and nausea. Just make them small healthy meals and snacks. And of course talk to your doctor, that's most important. Good luck! I was overweight before, too, and had actually just bought a diet and fitness system the same week I found out. Hah. So now I'm holding it until after baby shows up.
