They will give you he meds just to be safe, even if you've never had an outbreak.

What if you never had a breakout in your life

They will give you acyclovir at 36 weeks to take twice a day. You should be able to have a natural birth as long as you're not having an outbreak. Ask your doctor about the antibiotic, and try not to worry too much about it.

Make sure your dr knows. Yes, it can be passed to the baby, especially if you have a breakout at the time of delivery. Look  it up online too. I think they can give you an antibiotics during the last part of your pregnancy so it doesn't get passed to the baby. If you have a break out when you go into labor they may opt for a csection so it's not passed on to the baby.

No it does not mean your baby will have it. I have had it for 10 years and am now 7 weeks pregnant. My doctor has said it is fine to take acyclovir (the anti-viral used to treat it) during pregnancy and that many times they will have the woman take it a couple weeks before her due date prophylacticly to decrease the chance of having an outbreak during labor and delivery. They will do a cesarean if you have active lesions during delivery because it can cause blindness in the baby. Finding out that you have this can be devastating (I know) but don't worry. Actually a large percentage of the population does. In my experience stress is the number one factor in having an outbreak and we all know that pregnancy can create a ton of stress physically and mentally. Read some literature on it because knowledge always trumps fear. It will be ok!
