It all depends on your body. My sister had an 8lb 11 oz baby and did not tear at all. I had an 8lb baby and had a  third degree tear...but they also used the vacuum bc my baby's cord was wrapped around her neck and she was getting distressed. I don't know how many stitches I had but it took a full 6 weeks to heal. It took a good 2 months for things to start feeling normal again. I was terrified of tearing but now that it happened it wasn't as bad as I imagined. If you do tear you just need to ice, take pain meds and use a peri bottle.

The amount you tear depends in you and the size of your baby... With both my kids I had a grade 1 tear-- which is very minor and they both required stitches... With baby 1 it took 6 weeks to fully heal and I couldn't have sex for 2 more weeks after that since it was too painful... This time the pain stopped at 2 weeks... I'm 3 weeks post partum
