I'd say it depends on your doctor. With my first they didn't do one at all or anything else to induce labor and I was told they wouldn't unless I was 42 weeks or if it was dangerous to continue waiting for it to happen naturally. They never even checked me to see if I was dilated since I went into labor on my due date.

Here in the Uk they do sweeps from 38 weeks..this is my 4th pregnancy. Ive had 2 sweeps with 2 different pregnancies and both worked straight away. Although when i had them done i was already 3cm dilated so maybe that helped. I went from 3cm to 7 cm within 2 hrs with both sweeps.

My last pregnancy my Dr did it at 37 weeks. I was only 2 cm and 40 % effaced when he did it. I had my son 6 hrs later. Of course everybody is different. I have had 4 children so far, and they all came super fast!

My dr did it at 40 weeks exactly with my son at 4pm and my water broke like 2am that night/morning. I was barely dilated at all when they did it so it was uncomfortable. They wouldn't do it before because I wasnt dilated enough to get their finger in to do it.

During an internal examination, she will sweep a finger around your cervix (neck of your womb). This action should separate the membranes of the amniotic sac surrounding your baby from your cervix. This separation releases hormones (prostaglandins) which may kick-start your labour....

Copied off a site says it better than i can lol .. when my doctor did mine it was kinda uncomfortable and almost painful

My doc wont do anything to induce before 39 weeks unless medically necessary. He also said he would only do a sweep if he thought my body was ready because it can leave me open to infection :/
