Some registries let you add a note to items. Maybe you can do that? Something like, "dads pick!" Or "baby x seems to really want this" then if people shop your registry (not everyone will) they will see you really want it.

Babys r us lets you do returns and gives a discount for anything not purchased on your registry after the shower

As Imaslice said being registered does not necessarily mean that guests will buy you items from the registry. But I can't imagine them showing up without bringing anything for the baby even if its not exactly the gift that you want them to bring.

Yeah that won't work. They don't care about their nephew :( I thought that maybe by doing a registry I could compromise them on finally getting the baby somenthing.

I really don't think you can make someone buy off your registry. You can write where you are registered on the invitation but most people just give what they want to.  But if you want something specific, just tell that person what it is you want.
