Studies on melatonin show that while it isn't addictive, your body can get lazy in the natural production of melatonin and can thus make you dependant on it. No specific studies have been done on pregnancy because it's classified as a supplement and therefore the fda doesn't require the same safety studies but it is absolutely not recommended. Dr. 's and researches do theorize that supplementing with melatonin while pregnant can inhibit healthy melatonin production in the babies brain and potentially lead to a life time of sleep problems, some of which may not be identifiable until after puberty.

Again specific studies have not been done regarding this, however there is significant data results from long term affects since melatonin became widely available nearly 30 years ago, and many attribute the significant increases in apniea and insomnia in young adults to dependence and or over exposure to melatonin supplements during developmental years.

I take melatonin and have for all three pregnancies and planning on taking for my forth. My doc says 3mg is fine. Safer then most other sleep aids. As with everything there is risk. All of them do.

I had to take ambien my entire first pregnancy because my insomnia was so bad. Talk to your doctor is its really bad, because while you ideally wouldn't take anything during the first trimester, not sleeping is actually worse.

Don't take melatonin!! You really should not take anything in the first trimester. Try warm bath, warm milk?
