transfusions?

Has anyone had a transfusion either while pregnant or shortly after?  I have been having a very rough day. I found out today (at 39 weeks) I am severly anemic and my dr is talking the possibility of a transfusion. I have been miserable for months and am just shocked no one checked my hemoglobin levels before but when they finally did in Monday we found out my levels are less than 10.  I was given strong iron supplements to take and was told we woukd reevaluate the situation on Friday at my apt.  I am so nervous that I am not going to be able to keep them down and will end up getting a transfusion. I haven't been able to keep much down this whole pregnancy thanks to HG and now it's even worse. I litterally throw up every time I eat and have been ordered to drink 3 protein shakes a day just to get some nutrients in me before I go into labor. I am so lost and scared and confused right now.

I had 2 blood transfusions & 1 iron transfusion during pregnancy . My Iron level is now less than 8. I'm almost 36 weeks. I'm probably going to be having one before I deliver & during . Maybe even after too depending on how much blood I loose. Scary.

Yeah there is and also I would make them try an iron infusion before I blood transfusion. Anything you can try so u can see if it works.

oh I didn't know they had dissoluble tablets. That might work better since I am able to keep liquid down sometimes. I just hope I have enough time between now and next week when I am scheduled to deliver pending I don't go before hand

Ask your Dr for a dissolvable iron supplement it might work better for you because it gets in your body faster, unlike pill form which sit in you intell it dissolves. Worth a try..I would personally decline a blood transfusion I cant handle the thought of it. My sisters iron was extremely low and they told her she would need one but she got her iron raised back up enough and everything turned out fine.

My biggest concern is that i haven't been able to keep my prenatal vitamins down and that i won't be able to keep the iron down either. I really didn't want to do a transfusion but i don't know what else i can do if the supplements don't agree with me

I was told same thing too. km trying to avoid to get the transfusion especially since I heard u wont feel the same again. My mother in law got it and she said if she can go back in time and say no she would.  Right now im taking 2 irons a day and my prenatals, I was eating so much ice in the beginning til last wk. They found out I was anemic at 32 wks thank god they did on time. And now I barely crave for ice. Just rake ur prenatals and ur iron hopefully u wont have to go thru it. Good luck.
