Some women's contractions start right away, some not for hours and some women's water doesnt even break until near the end of labor. For me, my water breaking is what started my labor, I wasn't having contractions before my water broke with my second son. I work um at 830 in the morning, felt a big pop and my water broke in a gush. My contractions started a few minutes later and were 3-4 minutes apart. My labor from start to finish was 7hrs.

Most people have contractions BEFORE their waters break. It's more unusual to have them break first, but usually contractions start soon after (if they've been broken at hospital to bring on labour there's less chance of them starting soon). Occasionally there's just nothing, and doctors will want to induce 18 to 24 hours after they broke to reduce risk of infection. Once waters have broken, you shouldn't have sex and you might want to think about minimising internal dilation checks as they can increase chance of infection.

My waters broke at 5am one morning and I had to be induced at 8am the following day as I hadn't had any contractions and was only 3cm dilated. Was put on a pitocin drip.

You should, but don't always. Water breaking usually starts the 24 hour clock for getting baby out or risking infection. Some OBs recommend pitocin to help contractions if they haven't really picked up and you are getting close to that 24 he mark.
