Im having my third baby in February. You will definitely want to bring your own toiletries. After birth, especially if you give  birth naturally, you will probably want to take a shower once you are feeling a but more steady on your feet. Taking a shower will make you feel a bit more human again. I'm also always bring my own comfy pjs, robe and slippers. Also a nursing bra (without underwire) is not a bad idea, I have always packed one (but im bigger chested so it makes sense for me!) This time I'm packing a roll of toilet paper, the hospital I go to has sand paper in their dispensers (not really, but its not very soft). A going home outfit for you and baby is a good idea also. I usually get a lot a visitors, and I'm not sick, so I dont want them to see me in a hospital gown and looking like I was just hit by a truck because I haven't showered in three days, but that's me. You need to figure out what works for you. You know yourself and know what makes you comfortable! good luck! :)

So, with my first baby I had all sorts of things packed.  I didn't use much of any of it.  Definitely socks but make them socks that you are willing to just throw away when you leave the hospital.  Mine got blood on them with every delivery.  Yuck!!  You do not need pajamas.  You won't want to change into them and there is a lot of bleeding after the bay so it is easiest to just wear the hospital gown.  Have lots of pads at home for when you get home and get super thick ones and some thinner ones.  You'll use a lot of these which I had NO idea.  My husband had to go out at 3 am to WalMart to get pads for me when we first got home from the hospital.

Okay, so going home clothes----  take maternity clothes.  I had thought your body just popped right back to prebaby size after you give birth.  Nope.  I still looked like 8 months pregnant!  The uterus has to shrink back and you have a lot of fluid, etc.  So, bring COMFY pants to go home in.  And an outfit for baby.  My baby swam in the 0 to 3 month clothes . ..   and he was 8 and a half pounds!!  So with my next baby, I bought a couple of premie outfits that he only work for a couple of weeks until he grew into those 0 to 3 month clothes.  Just FYI.  Bring the car seat too, obviously.

Practice with the car seat.  My husband and I took like 25 minutes to get the baby strapped into the car seat because we hadn't played around with it.  I'm surprised the hospital staff let us newbies take the baby home after that!!  Bring a camera to capture all the moments!!  Magical and not so magical like when we were fumbling with the car seat in front of the exit door.

Toiletries---  you most likely will not shower.  You are recovering and although I had all my stuff, it wasn't happening.  You are a bit unsteady after birth.  I did have my cosmetic bag though and touched myself up along with a hair brush and hair spray and pony tail holders.

That was about all I really needed.

Oh, and take EVERYTHING in the hospital room that is designated for your birth. All the extra diapers, wipes, baby shampoo, pads for you, etc.  You've paid for that stuff and it is yours so take it with you.

good luck
