what's the deal with breast pumps?

I'm 28 weeks pregnant with my first child today. (A baby girl we're naming Destiny) I plan on breastfeeding but my mother didn't and I don't know much about it. I've heard you need to go expensive with a pump. Is that true? If the baby latches do I still need to pump? Should I do both? Any info is much appreciated! Thanks!!

My insurance also covered my pump. A nice medela double electric one (retail $300). Comes witha tote and some supplies. call your insurance to see if you are eligible for one! I just picked mine up today free of charge from a medical supply store after my doctor wrote me a prescription for one.

I read that breastfeeding is supposed to be good for you and baby.  You give baby your antibodies through breastmilk to fight off certain things.

Pumps are expensive!  Manual pumps are way cheaper, but are better if you plan to give baby milk via your breasts (physically) most often.  Otherwise, an electronic pump would be better because you can pump milk way faster for storage and baby gets your milk through bottle feeding whenever needed.

It can't hurt to have a breast pump for times when you don't be able to nurse. Insurance companies give them to you for free just call and ask - the good ones.
