Now days with most doctors you have to ask.  At 37 weeks my doc didn't do anything, at 38 weeks he wasn't going to until I asked.  Sometimes they assume things from previous pregnancies as well, like if you didn't go into labor with your first because of size that you won't with your next.  So I just said, "I want to see if there's anything going on."

Mine checked me at 37+3. But only because I may be induced at 39 weeks and we need to make sure I'm dilating a little.

I wasn't checked until after I was admitted to the birthing center, more than 12 hours into active labor, and then only because I asked for a status update. There's no real reason to check before active labor has started unless there are complications or signs of preterm labor (I get the reasoning for brittanyarthur's too). It increases the risk for infection and of irritation to the cervix (which can swell it further shut). And it doesn't tell you anything since you can be 3cm for six weeks or go from 0-10cm in four hours. Knowing where you're at when you're 36 weeks has absolutely no bearing on when your baby will arrive.

I got checked with every pregnancy at 36 weeks and they consider you to be in active labor at 4cm which I was @ 37 weeks I'm 33.5 now and I'm sure I'll be checked at 36 weeks

I was 31 weeks when I was checked & have been every week since then now I'm 35+ weeks but only because this is my 4th baby & I started having contractions early on...I'm dialated & starting to thin out..I just think it depends on the pregnancy & every woman is different..every pregnancy is different too ....
