Had a sono today - he is measuring 4 lbs 7 oz, which is the 70th percentile. He never lets us see his face, today was no exception - in fact it was all the way over by my left hip!
I was told that he has an atrial septal defect (ASD), a small hole between his atrium. It saddens me greatly as I used to be a nurse in the Peds ICU and saw all the kids up there getting their ASD repairs. I would hope if it's "small" there's still a chance that it could close on it's own in the next year or so (I obviously never saw the kids with the ones who closed up spontaneously - only the ones who didnt!). The doctor wants me to find a pediatrician so he can let them know in advance so we can have the peds cardiologist come see the baby when he's still in the hospital and have an echo done.
Then he said something about the renal vasculature being dilated, how it causes increased UTIs and kidney issues. I wasn't really paying attention because of the shock of the whole ASD thing. I wish he would have talked about this first! I go back next week (have a weekly sono from now on) so I will ask more questions about this at that time.
My daughter who is now 12 had a hole they closed via heart surgery at 4 years of age. I guess I never figured the chances would be 2 out of 3 of my kids having a congenital heart defect! It also makes me worry that there's some underlying genetic problem or something else they haven't "discovered" yet. As a nurse, I know just enough to be worried unfortunately.
