I've had cats with my children no problem, just don't let them sleep in the same room with the baby till the baby is a little older. That way the cats don't sleep on the baby and another it.

We kept our male cat with our first and he basically ignored her when she was a newborn, but now that she's a toddler she loves to pet him all the time. As I've heard, it's actually better to have pets in the home because it can help prevent allergies. Good luck!

As long as your cats are well cared for and your home is kept clean, and you won't be changing the litter box with baby in your arms, there's nothing to worry about.
Unless you have an a**hole cat from hell.

No, please click on my photos for a nice shot of my son and the cat asleep together when he was quite small.

The family telling you this could be for several reasons.  Here they are, in order of  'OK reason' to 'stupid reason.'

-  The baby is known to be allergic to cats.  Since your baby has not been born yet, you don't have any way to know this.
-  The cats will have toxoplasmosis while you are pregnant and you will eat some of their older poops and get it and it will cause problems for the baby.
-  The cats are wild and bite people or pee on their things.
-  Your boyfriend's family is afraid of cats.
-  The family believes the old wives' tale that cats will "suck out the breath" of the baby.

If you have well cared-for and well loved cats and your house is clean, they will not be a danger to the baby.  Mostly mine were scared of the baby.  The black-and-white cat in the photos is the only one, of four we had, who didn't simply run away in fear.
