baby showers
Has anyone heard that Moms (as in grandma-to-be) are not supposed to throw the baby shower? With my only siblings away at school and my closest friends low on funds it seems my mom may be the only one able to throw my baby shower, however she is convinced its not polite. Is this true?
My mom and the babies godmother threw mine. All of my friends who have been pregnant recently had their showers thrown by their moms as well.
My grandma would say that its not traditional for the mom to be to know about the baby shower, its always a surprise.
By the strongest etiquette sticklers, yes. It's an offshoot of the Victorian expectation that the family is of course going to buy the pregnant woman what she needs for the pregnancy, making a family throwing a shower for one of its own like having a party and asking for money. In that vein, friends could throw one because they had no self-interest; they were not trying to get out their responsibility (they didn't have any in the first place) so they could party for you all they wanted.
That said, the attitude is considered somewhat old-fashioned by about everyone I know under 30. If you live in a traditional world (I am thinking of you, my socialite friends in the South) and want to avoid looking odd that your mom is throwing the shower (depending on how old and how traditional the ladies are that you ask to the shower, some might raise an eyebrow), posit it as being a pleasant afternoon celebration, or an evening party, in honor of the baby to come, rather than a shower. I do hope you invite some traditional older ladies, because they give the best gifts. lol
ps -- If your mom AND a friend of yours throw it, that is OK. The presence of the friend puts it into the lacking-ulterior-motive category, and everyone just assumes the mom is there to help because that is what helpful moms do.

My mom threw my brother and his girlfriend a shower and shes throwing one for me and my boyfriend where I live and my boyfriends dad is throwing one where he lives
