14 weeks and no fetus

On 3May2009 we found out we are expecting out 3rd child--4wks preg! Very excited. My hubby is military and we were 3 wks away from PCSing (moving to another military post) and the hospital where we were couldn't get me in for a check up til 9June. I would obviously be moved by then. They told me to wait til I got to my new post and get seen then. They gave me prenatal vits. So we got moved and I got an appt......not til 13July--14 wks preg!! I was upset it was going to take so long but there was nothing I could do. So I went in for my check up and had the normal pap done and the dr checked for the heart beat, and couldn't find it. They did an u/s and said I had a tilted uterus (which I didn't have with my other 2 kids--now 4 and 2). During the u/s they only saw a sac and no baby. they said the sac was measuring 7 wks? I don't understand at all...LMP 3April2009. I have had no bleeding, no cramping. I have outgrown my clothes and every possible preg symptom. I had my HcG levels checked on the 13th and then today. I was told they had dropped but don't know the numbers. I was told my body would expell or naturally miscarry in 2 wks. Is there any hope? She said I had what's called a blighted ovum. Has anyone else heard of this or had a good outcome? We are going in friday to test HcG again and then getting a second opinon later on. I am praying and holding on to a little bit of hope. Any info is appreciated! BTW--I am Rh- and I don't know if that has anything to do with my HcG levels or not. Thank you all!

Well good luck! Please let us know how your 2nd opinion goes and if it is, in fact, Vanishing Twin. Perhaps a vaginal ultrasound with a very experienced technician with top-notch equipment could help see things better.

Im worried myself but they said if I had an infection I would have signs of one ie fever pain and possible bleeding...it really makes me wonder about the vanishing twin syndrom thing b/c of my tilted uterus and the drop of my HcG levels!

I completely understand you wanting to get a second opinion! And that's a great idea. And what you said about not understanding how you've gone this long without miscarrying if the sac is only 7 weeks also concerns me. If the pregnancy has ended and you haven't miscarried then you do risk infection. That's why I mentioned the Methotrexate or D&C. I don't know that you could wait another 2 weeks, when it's already been 7 weeks since any growth has taken place, in the event your pregnancy has ended.

She told me that I would miscarry it all within 2 wks but I don't understand how I went this long without miscarrying it if the sac only measures 7 wks! B/c I've had two kids already I know that anytime you bleed during preg you have to get the rhogam shot and after the baby is born. I had to have it at 12 wks with my first one and after he was born and then I didn't bleed at all with my 2nd child so I only got the shot after he was born. I just don't want to give up til I have checked every option possible. I know it may sound crazy but I just want to make sure. I was told as long as there is no fever or excessive pain or bleeding there is no need for me to rush along the miscarriage. I've been doing alot of surfing the web on this subject and my questions and I've found alot of stuff about "vanishing twin" and it's hard to see the "live" one with a tilted uterus. I guess it gives me hope but I don't want to get overly excited if the outcome is a negative one. Thank you for you feedback though. any advice is welcomed!

By the way, when your miscarriage is over you'll need a shot of Rhogam.

This is often termed a Missed Miscarriage, in which the baby has passed/not grown in early pregnancy and it isn't found until later on. If the baby stopped growing at 7 weeks then you may need Methotrexate or a D&C to complete the miscarriage as it has already been another 7 weeks.

Because the miscarriage was missed you have continued to grow a belly and have symptoms.

I'm truly sorry! The RH- thing may have had something to do with it. I'm not sure when women need the Rhogam when they are pregnant and are RH-.
