I guess it's different here in New Zealand but midwife won't check as its deemed unnecessary unless they need to check something! My first pregnancy I was checked at 39+3 when I had a specialist appointment and they were trying to decide whether to induce me or not. I'm 37 weeks at the moment and won't be checked till labor

I refused to get my cervix checked after the first time. My doctor was gone so his assistant checked me. It was so painful and I had bad cramps 3-4 days after. I loved being pregnant so much and miss it a lot but I still can't get over getting checked all the time! !! For me doctor constantly checking me was worse than giving birth lol

My dr said she would do a check along with the strep b test at 35 weeks then unless there are issues they will not check me again.

Obs will check you when your 36 weeks pregnant but have been know to do it earlier it you are showing signs of labor. I don't get checked because you can't pin point when a baby will be born by telling how far dilated you are. My sister was 1cm dilated at 36 weeks and had my mom go up to see her because she says she was "going into labor" which she ended up choosing to be induced at 41 weeks and she was still 1cm dilated. And she was heartbroken. The whole time she said "I know I am progressing I can't wait to find out how far I am dilated"

There's nothing wrong with wanting to know progress if your curious and if your dr is willing to do it

I wasn't checked until I asked my midwife for an update about 13 hours into active labor at 40w1d. There's no good reason for routine cervical checks in women who are low risk and showing no signs of labor. It increases the risk for infection and can irritate and swell the cervix. Knowing whether or not you are dilated at 36 weeks gives you absolutely zero useful information anyway. Women can be 3 cm dilated for six weeks or go from 0-10cm in four hours. It's completely meaningless. If my provider wanted to check me, with no medical indication, I would refuse.
