Af just arrived..

I started spotting last night, hoping it was just going to be spotting. And this morning when I woke up it was heavier, like the start of a regular af. Looks like I'll be TTC the end of November/December. I'll definitely be buying an OPK and keeping track of my BBT and cm to figure out when I o.

Can anyone explain how bbt works and what I should be looking for around o?

Darn!!

Well, I'm happy you're going the route of the OPK and the BBT charting.  There's a book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler that's all about the FAM method and charting your BBTs - it's a must read.  Don't be put off by its thickness, because there's chapters like menopause and how to avoid pregnancy that you can skip right over.

BBTs will generally show a biphasic pattern: low temps pre-ovulation and high temps post-ovulation.  OPKs are good at showing you're close or primed for ovulation, but BBTs are most helpful to show if you've actually ovulated.  OPKs and BBTs work well in tandem.

BBTs can also show over a few cycles if there's some issues with fertility, such as a too short luteal phase, or anovulation periods, etc.  They're easy to show your doctor or RE should help be needed down the road.  Meanwhile, I can help answer charting questions!
