Anyone with PCOS trying to get pregnant?

Hi.  My name is Maryjo and I am new to this group.  I'm 34 yrs old so I'm glad I found you in time.  I have one 3 yr old daughter who came as a complete suprise as I was diagnosed with PCOS back in 1997.  My RE back then told me I'd never be able to get pregnant on my own, but I got pregnant with her even while on birth control.  Now that my husband and I are actually trying to have another baby, I don't seem to even be ovulating on my own.  We've been trying for several months now and I've only gotten one period in a 6 month time span.  I'm wondering if anyone else has PCOS and can tell me what it was like getting pregnant.  I made an appt with a new RE for Monday morning and I'm just wondering what that might be like.

That's great that you started to ovulate!!

I saw my RE for the first time yesterday.  She is putting me on metformin as well as giving me provera to force a period, then I will start my first cycle of clomid.  My insurance requires me to do 6 cycles of clomid before they will cover anything else, but I'm hoping the combination of met and clomid is all I'll need.  I know my husband and I have talked about it and we know the problem is me, not him.  If he and his exs hadn't aborted, he'd have 5 kids instead of 2.  So he is just fine.  We also agreed that if we don't get pregnant with me on medication and timed sex then we'll just be happy with the one child we do have together.  We're not going to do IUI's, injections, or IVF.   She did an ultrasound and found tons of cysts on both ovaries which explains my lack of ovulation.  I also have to go for a fasting bloodsugar test next week from 8-10am to see what dosage of met she's going to put me on.  At least the one she's giving me is Metformin ER so I only have to take it once a day.  I'll start with 1 pill for the first week and work my way up to 4 pills once a day.  I'm just glad to finally have some more answers and a doc that cares!

i to have pcos, i was diagnosied about 6-7yrs ago. when is stopped taken the pill i noticed that i was never having a period, nothing to spotting to symptoms of af nada!  so i went to my gp, he said i was over weight and to lose some weight, so i tried and i tried no matter what i did i couldnt get the weight shifted, so i went to another doc and they diagnosied me with pcos.  they said at time my periods wound never return therfore i as infertile. so i left it at that.  about two years ago i got a period, and low and behold i have one every month now!!!! i am still tryin to get my head round it all, i had blood test done last oct nov and dec, i ovulated 2 out of 3 months.  any hoo to cut a long story short i am hoping my doc is going to give me metformin this week to help with the weight loss and he is now hopfull that i will get pregant :-)  its gonna take some time but i am feeling up beat about it.

Oh I forgot to mention that I am not on metformin yet, but I'm hoping to get on it Monday.  Both my sisters are on it already.  My older sis is the one that lost twins at 23 weeks after going thru 3 rounds of clomid and IUI's and was diagnosed with PCOS back in 1997 like me.  My younger sis isn't even sexually active (never has been) but was also diagnosed with PCOS just a few months ago.  Both of them said the metformin has helped them with weight loss and I'm hoping it'll help me too.  I still have 65 pounds to lose before I reach my goal weight.  My hopes are that the metformin will help me lose weight and trigger ovulation again without clomid.  But at least it's an option if I need it.

Thanks so much for all the information.  I know pregnancy with PCOS is possible since I have a 3 yr old daughter.  My husband and I found out we were pregnant 3 weeks before our wedding and I was still on birth control pills.  So it is a miracle that we have her at all.  Now that we are focusing on ttc I'm not ovulating.  Just because I want the baby now and it seems like torture...LOL

I have PCOS also and have been TTC for almost a year now. But my doctor told me that if I am not pregnant in the next month or 2 they are going to put me on Clomid! My mom also has PCOS. They doctors told her she would never have children. Two weeks after that appointment... well here I am now! Then she had my brother. For 7 years she tried to have another baby with no luck. After she went back on birth control and sold all her baby stuff she had 2 more little girls! It will happen and I know how frustrating it is to try and not succeed!

I was not ovulating on my own with PCOS...it depends on a person I guess...so I was prescribed Metformin and then ovulation drugs (clomid, follistim) to get me to ovulate..I am currently pregnant, so all you need is a little push!! Justso that you know, it might take a while though...maybe a year before you actually get pregnant, but you will, don't worry!

I have PCOS and I'm currently pregnant- so pregnancy IS possible! There's a lot more information on PCOS and how to conceive now then 10 or more years ago. My aunt had PCOS and never ever had a child of her own because back then they didn't know what PCOS was.

It sounds to me like you're not ovulating right now. So if your doctor can get those ovaries to ovulate (using Femara or Clomid) then conception is definitely possible! That's how it worked for me.

Basically I was TTC (trying to conceive) for 11 months before I finally asked for Clomid. I used it two cycles without conceiving. I decided to just give up and focus on weight loss instead. The cycle I decided to not take Clomid, I ovulated and got pregnant!!! My doctor was NOT on top of things, however, and I kept asking for progesterone supplements (important when taking Clomid and other fertility meds). I ended up miscarrying because my uterine lining thinned out because of low progesterone.

Well I decided to get back on the weight loss. My first cycle after the miscarriage I ovulated and got pregnant AGAIN. And I'm currently 8 weeks now.

It's been a long road but I'm very excited. This is the baby that we're meant to have and we're beyond blessed. Anyway, when you see your RE they will most likely take blood and do a sonogram to see if you're ovulating. They may put you on Femara or Clomid and then test your blood post ovulation to see if you ovulated (they check progesterone because your progesterone shoots up when you ovulate).

Your RE may also check to see if there are any blockages in the fallopian tubes by inserting a dye into a catheter that is, I believe, in your vagina. The dye will fill your uterus and hopefully will fill your fallopian tubes to show they're clear.

You're on an exciting journey right now! I hope you find wonderful friends here and feel free to chat with me anytime!
