Breast swelling

My daughter just gave birth to a stillborn child and her breasts are swelling - nothing was given to her at the hospital to dry up the milk.  What do you suggest to relieve the symptoms, since excreting the milk probably would only encourage more milk reproduction?  I though perhaps either cold or warm compresses - but I'm not sure.  I told her to contact her doctor, but right now she is extremely depressed and does not want to talk to anyone but me (mama).

Ice, snug fitting bra, sage tea, ibuprofen and lots of fluids. I also read that cabbage leaves in your bra works, not sure why but you can google it. The dr can prescribe something too because it takes about a week for your body to do it on its own. I am very sorry for your loss :(

Heartbreaking. I am sorry you are all going through this. I can't imagine.

Yes to the cabbage leaves. My sister opted not to nurse her daughters and that is what she used to dry up her milk.

I don't believe the drs give meds to dry up the milk anymore I read somewhere it was cancer causing so they stopped giving the shot, not sure about pills though. A few things that worked for me were as follows.  Place cabbage leaves in the fridge and place the cold leaves directly in your bra on the breasts.  When they are no longer cold replace with fresh ones. She can take plain benadryl, it will help to dry up the milk.  So sorry for her loss.

Hi Sue,after reading your post i felt like i had to reply. I gave birth to my little girl in 2010 and she too was born sleeping.....it is the most gut wrenching and devastating things a woman can go through and in my experience the pain you feel never leaves you,you never get over your loss but you learn to live with the emotion and grief. My milk came in the day after i had my angel and that in itself was an ordeal...felt so wrong to have milk to feed my baby but her not being with me : ( I was advised by my midwife to take ibuprofen and as uncomfortable and sore as it was to just leave my breasts and the milk will dry up. I really do feel for you and your daughter.....big hugs to you both and i hope she stays strong xxxxx
