Breastfeeding and hypothyroidism

Hi,

I have hypothyroidism(under active thyroid). I read online that some women with this condition have difficulty lactating. Does anyone else have hypothyroidism and what was your experience when breast feeding

Hi. I have an underactive thyroid (for the past 2 years) and I am on Synthyroid to control it. My 2nd daughter was born in September and she is only breast fed. She is just about 3 months old and breast feeds wonderfully. Of course in the beginning it is alittle difficult becuase all newborns have to learn how to latch on but I did not see any big difference on how long it took her to latch from my 1st daughter. My breastfed my 1st daughter until she was 1 yrs old and plan on doing the same with this daughter.
I'm sure you will have no problem.

I too have an underactive thyroid. I first had a hyperactive thyroid but got radioactive iodine and therefore it turned hypo. I have been on something like synthoid to keep my levels normal and was able to breastfeed my son for up to 11 months.
If you get your levels at a good point then you should be fine.
