Does HSG or Metformin induce ovulation?

I got my first HSG on June 10th and I started taking 1000mg of Metformin on June 17th. I'm not sure if it was before or after, but I started discharging a clear and sticky mucus that was later confirmed to me as a sign of ovulation. I was really proud to hear this since I had never been able to determine whether or not I was ovulating. However, I would like to know what could had triggered for my body to make such change. Was it the Metformin or the HSG?

The first day of blood flow (not spotting) is considered the first day of your period!

Thank you very much for the insight....I have already signed up to soulcysters.net. It another wonderful website, especially b/c I can relate to so many other women dealing with PCOS.

Maybe you can answer me this silly question...If I started spotting on July 2nd...saw brown discharge the next day on July 3rd...and on July 4th...I started having a heavy flow of bleeding....Would July 2nd or 4th be considered the first day of my menstrual cycle? I'm trying to track my menstrual cycle especially since I'm taking Metformin and I want to make sure that it's being effective on me....Maybe I can finally also track my ovulation periods...and be able to finally conceive.

Thanks again!!!  :-)

Yeah, the dosage can get pretty high. A really good forum to check out is soulcysters.net if you have the time to sign up. It's ALL ABOUT PCOS!

I didn't really have any side effects. It actually helped my moods. I have noticed, since being off of it, how much more moodier I am (due to hormonal imbalance). So I'm looking forward to getting back on it. I've known quite a few women who took it, got pregnant, and were so excited to get back on it after they gave birth because it really does help!

Thank you very much for your feedback. It was really helpful for me b/c I just started taking Metformin and my dosage was recently increased. I didn't think it could be increased more than what I am taking though. Did or have you experienced any side effects?

BTW, Congratulations....Another documented miracle to help me not loose faith and hope in that someday I can also become a mommy!!!!....I am truly happy for you!!!!  :-)

I started spotting 2 days ago but I didn't get a heavy flow until today...I guess this means that I'm officially not pregnant....but I won't loose my hopes...I will continue taking Metformin since it seems to be helping me ovulate and regulate my menstrual cycles...and I will continue praying for my little miracle.  Like you, I've inquired about Clomid but my DR has advised me to stay on Metformin, try to loose weight, and continue TTC...if too much time passes and still no baby....then she will put me on Clomid to see if it works....Good luck on your next appointment and definitely let me know how it goes! :-)

Well you have to take Metformin consistently for more than a couple of months for it to be effective. It treats PCOS and diabetes.

Most likely the HSG caused your ovaries to trigger and release a follicle, or at least make your body believe that it did.

Metformin did WONDERS for me. I'm currently not on it because I'm pregnant (finally, after trying for over a year!) and I know I'll probably get on it again to treat my PCOS and help me lose weight... with the intention of hopefully curing me of PCOS completely. I got up to 2000-2500 mg of Metformin a day.

hi there :)  nope. nothing else.  i am still irregular and have an appointment with a new doctor on Monday.  I am going to talk to him about what other options I have to straighten out this mess!  I will let you know what I find out.  Have you discussed Clomid with your doctor if you are TTC??  My old Dr. said that will be my best option when we are die hard TTC, right now we are just seeing if it happens. lol

Thank you so much for the FYI. I had done a little research online and had read that it was indeed a diabetic drug used to treat PCOS. However, I had no idea that it could regulate a women's menstrual cycle. Are you taking anything else?

Hi there.  Metformin is a diabetic drug that is used to treat PCOS now.  It is suppose to help in regulating your menstrual cycle making you ovulate regularly. I took it for a couple months and it didn't do anything for me so good luck to you!!!
