Does any one else feel "weird" after taking Reglan?

I unfortunately get hyperemesis very bad each and every pregnancy. I've been given an aray of different things to calm the extreme nausea that lasts all day & all night. I've recently been given a medicine called Reglan or "metoclopramide". But it makes me feel strange and makes my legs "jump". Is this normal or should I stop taking it?

i hear you. i just had another reaction to it, and it was given to me last in the er 2 months ago. it is frightening. the limb flailing, the inability to express that you are actually aware of what you are doing, but cannot do anything.
my mind is still confused from the episode i experienced last night.
Maybe the worst part is that i already need to be on disability, and that is taking long enough, but my state medical coverage dropped me because i cant pay the monthly premium....because i cant work....

& "HE'S" still my least favorite person still. But he came to my house and sat outside crying in the car because I wouldn't let him see me. (I'm a lil stubborn.. tehe) but I finally gave in once I found out he had my STRAWBERRY SHORT CAKE! But give him some time.. he'll be back outside! *the sad pregnant TRUTH*

I have severe hypermesis with all of my pregnancies. With my first I was only 17, they admitted me to the hospital for re-hydration and gave me phenergan in my IV. I had NO idea that I was allergic to it. I had a severe dystonic reaction to it. I was seizing so bad my entire body was jumping off the bed. I was alone and my grandma walked in and saw it. She thought I was dying. I was completely alert to what was going on but my jaw was locked and I couldn't talk or call for help. It was really scary. They gave me benadryl and I had to take it for 24 hours until the phenergan was out of my system. So if you are having any type of symptoms talk to your doctor. I've been on Zofran and Reglan for the rest of my pregnancies and while I am still sick it's not as bad.

always better safe than sorry; I agree you should talk to your doctor. I don't think the reglan will affect your baby at all. I guess dystonic reactions aren't hereditary; both of my parents can take reglan just fine. I wasn't pregnant when I had the reaction and it scared the stuffing out of me so I understand your concern but just like an allergic reaction in a mother doesn't USUALLY affect the baby, I think you're just fine.

Definitely talk about one of the other nausea meds; as far as dystonic sensitivity, zofran is, to my understanding, the least likely to cause a reaction, and I can take both that and phenergan without a problem....although phenergan makes me horribly sleepy.

I had horrible nausea and vomiting with both pregnancies....I became a compulsive ice-chewer, lol. Not kidding...I would literally finish every meal or snack with a little cup of crushed ice and it really helped me a lot. But I definitely had to get nausea meds both times...I wouldn't have survived without!

The pains can be completely normal but like I said and Michele said..always better safe than sorry so I would phone my doctor on monday if I were you, and discuss the medicine. Don't let them write off your reaction to the reglan...a surprising number of doctors are unedcuated about dystonic reactions and will brush it off...so just tell them, if they try to ignore you "I don't want to take the chance and I would rather take something I feel safer taking." and go from there...

best of luck, don't worry about the little one, I'm sure he/she is just fine :-)

Hmmm...I am a better to be safe kind of girl.  I will always tell you to tell your dr.  LOL!  So, that's what I would do.  I have felt flu like before though and consider that normal.  Take the Tylenol as needed.  I have taken it with all my kids as I get killer headaches for the first trimester, and all of my kids have been fine.

No men don't understand.  My husband is def not my favorite person during this horrible time, but even with me feeling better, he's not my favorite person :(

April 1st...Well, I would def stop the Reglan.  The baby will probably be fine but without something, you may get really bad off.  Still might be worth a call to the doc just to tell them about the effects of the Reglan, ask about Zofran and also tell them your other symptoms.

& I have another question, let me explain first. I'm 10 weeks now. I've been feeling very "achey" in my lower abdomen, sometimes in my lower back as well. I have to take Tylenol several times a day to get any relief from it. But soon as it wears off I'm right back feeling the pain. I have NO bleeding (& never not even once had any bleeding) the baby is in my uterus and we found the heartbeat (by ultra sound) at like 8 weeks +. (176 bpm) everything seems normal. So is this pain (like cramps sort of) "growing pains" or should I get checked out for it? I haven't had a baby in like 5 yrs and I don't remember feeling so sore and achey with her..

Oh my! I knew that reaction couldn't be "right". That's exactly how I feel when I take it.. anxious & jumpy. Like I want to kick my legs and throw my arms. I will stop taking it. To Ashelen, Did that effect your pregnancy or the baby at all? I'm worried about that now. Thank you all so much for responding. To Michele I have an apt scheduled for the 1st. I was going to see if I can make it until then. I've been to the E.R. twice already. My 1st trimesters are AWFUL! Unfortunately men don't really understand how much we suffer from the hyperemesis. I've snapped on my babys father because he makes light of it. When I literally feel like I'm dying! We're not speaking right now because of it. Another thing to stress me out!

Are you sure you have to wait until your next appointment?  Can you call and ask the nurse?  I mean, I don't know when your next appointment is, but if it's not soon, I'd call.  Because you are right....10 weeks to 14 weeks does seem like a year.  That's what I have kept telling my husband.  I just tell him that it feels like this will never end...even though I know it will.  And even though I am 17 weeks now, I still have the bouts of nausea where I have to take the Zofran.  The worst is behind me as far as that goes, but it isn't completely over, but much better than what it was thankfully.

Ashelen is right about the Reglan.  I mean, I have seen commercials about it anyway.  I never had those side effects when I took it though.

Just wanted to clarify - my reaction to reglan started just as you describe it. but after about a week and a half of mild (every or every other day use) I built up to that whopper of a reaction that landed me in the ER and resulted in 2 doses of valium, some benedryl, and a 2-week regimen of flexeril to relax muscles that were still trying to spasm - yes you read that right it took TWO WEEKS for my muscles to stop seizing and spasming..it was horrific. seriously one of the scariest times in my life.

I also want to say that to this day I can take phenergan and zofran even though they're in the same family but reglan you will have to catch me in a coma to put into me ever again, lol, I would fight someone bloody if they tried to give it to me again!

DO NOT take reglan again if you've had this reaction. it's called a dystonic reaction and can happen to varying degrees. minor dystonic reactions include feeling "uncomfortable" or "anxious" and can occur with a broad range of meds, but reglan is a huge culprit. most people don't even notice it as a reaction.

however, over time, you can build up a stronger reaction to it and more serious things can happen. I had a dystonic reaction to reglan that caused my entire neck and face muscles to twist and seize up..it looked like I was having a seizure.

all the phenothiazines can cause this reaction and clearly you are sensitive so pay attention whenever you take any in the same family (phenergan, compazine, zofran)...but compazine and reglan are actually pending national lawsuits because they are so notorious for causing this reaction.

I really hope you see this - any time you feel like you have a side effect you feel uncomfortable with, discuss with your pharmacist and they can advise you about the dangers of possible reactions.

Thanks ladies that was helpful. I've been on phenergan as well Clysta. It makes me extremely sleepy as well. Michelle at my next appointment I will ask about the Zofran. I'm hoping I'm nearing the end of this stage. Ill be 10 weeks in 3 more days. They say I should start feeling better by 14 weeks. *that seems more like a year from now rather than a month* Thanks again for the advice! =(

There is the medication that Clysta mentioned.  I took that but it only made me really sleepy.  I couldn't take it during the day.  I would take it at night and it would help me sleep but that was it.  It does help some women though.

There is also a medication called Zofran.  Zofran is supposed to be really good for some women.  I am a little over 17 weeks pregnant and still taking it but not like I was.  It didn't make my nausea go away at all, but I noticed that if I didn't take it, I would vomit even more.  I couldn't even hold water down.  You might want to try that one.  It doesn't make you sleepy or anything.  I didn't/don't feel what you have been feeling.  The only side effect that Zofran has is that it CAN cause headaches and constipation.  Be sure to try to take stool softeners while taking this if you decide to try this one.

I have taken Reglan before but it wasn't for the Hypermesis.  It was to help up my supply of milk while I was nursing.  When my baby was about 8 months old or so, my supply was dwindling and I wanted to keep going to a year if I could.  I was working and pumping.  Anyway, that's why I took it and it did help with that.  I didn't have any of the side effects you are having but I have heard of that happening with that medication.  Def mention it to your doctor.

Good luck and I am so sorry you are feeling this way.  It is horrible and unless you go through it, one can't really comprehend just how horrible it is :(  I would really try the Zofran though.  It seems to be the medication that has the least amount of side effects.

I took Phenergan for my Hyperemesis, and had a similar reaction. Makes you feel like you constantly have to move or throw your arms and legs around. It drove me crazy (especially cause I was in a hospital bed and they're tiny) but you get used to it and it stops. You can call your prescribing doctor and explain it to them. They might want to switch you to something else.
