Eating placenta after birth

Any of you ladies ever done it or know someone who has and what are the benefits?? I know it's gross but does it really help with breast milk?? I never even knew women did such a thing until I had a conversation with a lady in the waiting room at the doctors who told me she would be doing so.

Wow. This is a very interesting subject. I'm Chinese so my cultural had use it for medicinal purpose in the old day. I have no idea it's so common in modern society, I live I learn :)
Still can't imagine eating it, sound too gross. I saw it in a birthing video and it looks like a bloody sac, kind of liver like. Can't see myself asking for it, planting or otherwise, lol.

I can't grow anything so planting isn't an option for me and I think my poor hubby would pass out if we would have brought it home, thought he was gonna die when we had our first and he didn't realize the placenta was gonna come out...lol with 2nd and third baby he didn't watch that part!

its nothing gross, its what kept your baby alive inside you, the thought of that just being thrown away with the rubbish .... I dont know, seems a waste to me, any how in alot of cultures its of significant value... at least if you plant it your putting it to good use :)

its quite common over here, you normally get asked if you want to take it home, you can buy a pot and put a special plant in it if you live in an appartment :)

I like the planting idea, and I honestly wish i could do it.  But I live in an apartment :-(  same with the last pregnancy.  And I don't think my parents would take kindly to me plodding my placenta in their yard even though they have 2 acres in the country lol.

ya i couldnt imagine! i had plenty of milk as well and thankfully i never even seen mine! ive seen the cows eating theirs...or the dog and that grosses me out lol i wish i could have an open mind but i guess to each their own! And by no means am i an expert or have i looked into this but i thought the reason animals like cows did this was to prevent predators from picking up the scent(blood) and im sure there is some nutritional value but wow i think im already putting too much tought into this!... ill just leave it at to each their own lol

Bleh.  I had someone tell me "it's a natural thing to do, animals do it all the time."  This may be true, but animals aren't sitting in a hospital/home getting food brought to them.  They don't really go anywhere got a while so they eat their placenta for nutrients.  I'm sure it's the same for ancient times too.

That sounds gross. I don't think I'd be able to even take the pill only know what they are made from. I have heard of people doing that, but I've never known someone who has actually done it or what the benefits would be if taken.

Wow that just gave me hope lol because I really want to breast feed but mostly pump it. The lady in the waiting room told me if I ate my placenta I would make plenty milk.... I was very shocked I never heard of this.

They can make them into little pills you can take daily. I know of someone who is taking them right now and she has twins. So far she said she's not tired during the day even having to get up with twins so many times a night. She seems fine. I never thought about doing it myself, but I know many women do.
