kat, it may be illegal to fire someone who works for you already for getting pregnant (except in very small companies, who can often show that having them leave would be a financial burden for the company -- tiny companies are usually exempt from rules like this). But someone doing hiring is not going to be worried about this stricture when making hiring decisions. Most people doing hiring can find SOME reason not to hire a person that is not illegal; I've seen one person get hired and another not get hired because they were generally equally qualified but one had a nicer phone voice, or a more can-do attitude. That's not "discrimination" and it is often part of the hiring decision. As kays says, one would have to have proof that the pregnancy is why she wasn't hired. Barring big-numbers proof (like, there are 0 pregnant women in a 50,000-person organization) or a written statement from the person doing the hiring that says they would have hired her except she was pregnant, there is no way to file a successful complaint asserting discrimination on the basis of pregnancy. This means someone coming in to interview unfortunately doesn't have the "it's illegal to refuse to hire me" card. The company can just say they aren't hiring her because they don't like her computer skills as much as the next applicant's, or something else. That's why unless the pregnant woman has a really rare skillset where she is a catch no matter whether she plans to leave soon or not, she will do better applying at places that have a lot of employees (so they won't feel the financial strain if someone they have spent a lot of time training then leaves) and places like temp agencies who don't care if the person is going to be there a long time.
Unless they say they aren't hiring you because your pregnant then there is nothing you can do unfortunately. It is also illegal to be fired because your pregnant. If your not showing then maybe don't say anything if you need a job that bad
Maybe Kmart, the one I work at will hire pregnant women. But that's because our hr rep is pretty cool. I had a problem with transferring from one Kroger to another because I told the hr rep at the store I was trying to go to that I'm prego. So when I interviewed at Kmart, I didn't say anything cause I was scared. And it's actually illegal for any employer to not hire you simply because you're pregnant.
I found a full-time job when I was 10 weeks pregnant, and I told them in the interview that I'm quitting when the baby comes. I'm working for Comfort Keepers. I take care of elderly and handicapped people in their homes. Cook, clean, help with light medical procedures like medicine reminders, blood pressure readings, etc., and I drive them on errands and to appointments.
It's a good job, my bosses are great, and the company's nationwide. If you're interested, maybe you could look it up in your area.
Try a temp agency. They don't care if you are going to leave soon, if you have skills to offer now.
No one will hire a pregnant women because we're limited to the duties we can do and will be leaving soon
