I'm scared I might be having a miscarriage.

I am supposed to be 9 weeks pregnant according to my LMP, and I had my first OB appointment yesterday.  The doctor did a pap smear, and that caused me to bleed some. I've never bleed after a pap smear before, so I was kind of concerned about that being normal.  Then because I was on the pill when we got pregnant & because I tend to have irregular periods, she wanted to do an u/s to try and determine the age of the baby.  So she did the u/s on my tummy, and she could see the gestational sac, but she said that she couldn't see the fetal pole or the heartbeat.  She said hopefully I'm just not as far along as I think that I am because she should see a heartbeat if the baby was 9 weeks old.  This is my first baby, so of course I am really scared.  She told me to schedule an u/s, so that I could get the trans vaginal one, & they couldn't get me an appointment until next wed. (a whole week).  So I guess I am just wondering if i should be worried that she couldn't see anything with the normal u/s, or if I should just calm down about it because more than likely everything is fine.  She didn't tell me not to worry, but she didn't sound too alarmed either.  The whole pregnancy has been normal up to this point, and now when I wipe there's a light brownish blood, but I'm assuming that's from the PAP.  I'm really scared that I might be having a miscarriage, can anyone give me any help?

Update:  It was a missed miscarriage.  My body wasn't miscarrying on its own, so i scheduled a d&c.  The night before the D&C i started bleeding and cramping, and then had the D&C done at the hospital the next morning.  Everything went well, no complications.  I'm ready to move on now.

well this is certanially a lot to take in.

for starters, the cervix is tender when you are pregnant, so it is Very likely for the pap to be the cause of bleeding.  A lot of women bleed a tad after intercourse when preg too.  Bleeding in pregnancy can be common.  lots of women bleed & go on to have beautiful healthy babies.  It can also be a sign of miscarriage.  Sorry, I don't mean to scare you.

since your peroids are irregular there is a stonger chance of the dates being off too.  Keep in mind that even if you are positive of your last peroid and all, you can still be off by a week or so.  women dont ovulate like clockwork, even with regular peroids.  Scans can also be off about a week too.

A heartbeat should be seen by 9 weeks, but maybe you aren't 9 weeks...  I have heard of women not seeing a heartbeat until 8 weks.  maybe you are off a week or so....

I am sorry you are going through all of this.  I understand first hand how stressful it is.  I went through a similar situation last year, and went on to have a miscarriage.  I'm not saying you are... every pregnancy is different.  since you have brown blood, it could just be old blood.  I would think that if you are going to miscarry, the bleeding will intensy within the next few days (2-4) and turn brighter red.

unfortunately there is nothing you can do.  there is nothing anyone can do to stop a miscarriage.  it is not anything that you have done.  even the most cautious of women have miscarriages.

I hope that things develop for you, and you are just not that far along.   I have heard that you can see things much earlier with a vaginal us.  perhaps this is all you need.  Best wishes!

When you're pregnant your cervix is more sensitive, and a pap or even sex could cause slight bleeding.

Don't stress and try to relax. Take one day at a time and wait and see what happens next week.

Good luck!

You said you have irregular periods... You could have ovulated later and might not be as far as you think you are, Also the pap smear can cause spotting. If you're having any pain and heavy bleeding go to hosp ASAP!

Other than that to stem the flow, for now lay down with your feet elevated with a pillow!

Brown blood is old blood.
