And it's not harmful during pregnancy because it's not an active bacteria. But I say that because some women do refuse the test but it can be harmful if it does become active for both you and the baby! But if you get the antibiotics you'll be 100% okay! Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you I just feel so bad when women refuse the test since I've known the worst case of it/:

I said it's not harmful to carry it during pregnancy but yes, my 13 year old friend had group B strep and burned herself with a curling iron which caused the infection to become septic (in her blood) and caused septic shock and she became brain dead! Her name was Kaleigh Faeh if you want to read her caringbridge.

This is my third pregnancy I refused the test with my first because to me it didn't make sense to take. With my second I took it because I wanted to have a home birth and in case anything went wrong and I had to be transferred to the hospital I wouldn't want them to keep us an longer then they would have to. And I have been negative all times.

It's nothing to be afraid of. 20% of healthy women carry it. It comes and it goes. If you test positive there is a 1% chance of your baby getting it with or without antibiotics. It's very rare and can be deadly but very unlikely.

Hi there, I am currently pregnant with my 4th baby and he not yet been tested (30weeks) but I did test positive with baby #2 and they just gave me antibiotics during labour. No need to wory yourself, if you end up having a quick labor and or refuse the antibiotics, then they will just monitor baby to make sure there is no sign of infection in your newborn. Best wishes with the rest of your pregnancy.

You are working yourself up hun. Its really not as big of a deal as it seems as long as you follow doctors orders and get your antibiotics during labor. Its actually VERY common to carry it. I had it with my first, and got antibiotics. She is a perfectly healthy 4 year old yoday. Relax, your baby will be fine and so will you.

Hi are you sure she died from GBS.  The doctor told me it doesn't hurt adults but it can cause death in new born babies or naked then sick. I've never heard of an adult dying from GBS

My boyfriends sister was! Every women carries it in their body but sometimes it's there and other times it's not, when you "have it" its inactive but they give you antibiotics during labor and delivery to prevent it from being passed onto your newborn and becoming "active" which can be a simple illness or it can be extremely dangerous. I had it after pregnancy and was put on a high dose antibiotic for it but I know a girl 5 years ago now that had it in her blood and didn't know until she went into septic shock and died. But like I said, every women carries it but the antibiotics given during labor if you come out positive are just to prevent any further passing of the inactive infection!
