How can you have one healthy baby and three mc?

I had a miscarriage 4 years ago when I was 8 weeks pregnant.  I got pregnant a year later and had a healthy little boy with no complications.  My husband and I decided to start trying again in November 2009 when my son was 2 ½ .  We got pregnant 7 months later, and miscarried at 7 ½ weeks.  We began trying again right away, and got pregnant without having a period in between the miscarriage and the pregnancy.  I was very nervous about the pregnancy, and saw the doctor more than once a month.  At 14 ½ weeks I went in for my regularly scheduled appt., and was told my baby had no heartbeat.  I had four other u/s, and the baby always looked healthy with a strong heartbeat.  My doctor gave me some pills to take to terminate the pregnancy.  I’m now at 15 weeks, and I'm still waiting on everything to pass.  If it does not pass soon, I will have to have a D/C.  My doctor recommended we do genetic testing before trying again.  I guess my question is how can I have three miscarriages and a healthy baby, if there is something genetically wrong or incompatible with us.

If there are genetic problems it doesn't mean you cannot get pregnant it means that it is more difficult to sustain pregnancy. So yes it is possible there is a genetic reason. In the US for any patient after 3 m/c they recommend genetic testing. It's just standard how it's done so it doesn't mean that the OB thinks there is something specific but that is the procedures they go on.

I've only been pregnant once, twins, but my mom was pregnant five times and 3 of those ended in m/c's. No reason why, just one of things that happens. She had one right before me, one a few months after I was born and one a few years after my little brother. I'm sorry for your losses.

Thanks for your thoughts.  Prior to last week, I've had 4 u/s with this baby showing a healthy growing baby.  On Wednesday, is when I had the fifth u/s.  That u/s showed no heartbeat, and the baby measured at 12 weeks 4 days.  He should have measured at 14 weeks 3 days.  I went in on Thursday for another ultrasound.  That ultrasound showed same measurements and no heartbeat, so I did go ahead and take the pills.  However it's been 4 days and nothing has happened.  I will take a second round of pills tomorrow.  If that doesn't work, I meet with my dr. on Thursday to schedule a d/c.

I have ben pregnant 7 times; I've had 2 m/c, four healthy babies, and i'm 8 weeks pregnant with #5.  There are many many reasons why we miscarry, but the fact that you've had a healthy baby is a really really good sign.  Don't lose faith.

Im sorry for your losses,I know how you feel,I have a 17 year old concieved no problem at all.followed by 6 mc,then a healthy 8month old now and pregnant again, its hard to understand why, when we gave birth before no probs, there  are so many reasons,1 -4 will mc through no fault and no explanation,we had all tests done yet they still didnt have an answer.were you told baby had no heartbeat then saw one after this.its a shame you took the pills, think I would have insisted on another scan.there isnt any answers hun,as hard as it is.when you do concieve again, ask your doctor to give you baby asprin, and possibly progesterone,I was placed on asprin due to losses until i reach 34 weeks.its meant to help with recurrent mc.I really hope you get some answers.but no it will happen hun.good luck to you.
