IBS and pregnancy

About 7 years ago, I was diagnosed with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) I have had it since I was in the 7th grade...but was only diagnosed at the age of 22. I normally have pains about once a month...it really is not very often...seems as I got older, it kinda faded a lot. Anyway, now that I am pregnant (currently 10 weeks along), it seems I have several pains a day. They hurt SO bad and make me feel sick to my stomach. I have never had bowel problems...diarrhea or constipation...in fact, I am pretty regular...but I do have the contractions and the pains that go along with it. It literally feels like labor pains at times. Lasts a couple of minutes then slowly fades away.

I am just wondering if anyone else has this...and if it seems to be worse during pregnancy??? It is really driving me nuts. I am so uncomfortable and just all in all miserable with it.

am I alone????

I have IBS and am 21 wks.  It seems to have made me tend more toward constipation while I've been pregnant and I've had to increase fiber and take Citrucel (with my doctor's okay) just to keep things going.  The first trimester wasn't that bad for me, but in just the past week or so I have had to increase the Citrucel.  Sometimes the IBS gives me various stomach pain, which worries me sometimes because I had a previous miscarriage.  But usually I can kind of tell that the pain is from my intestines.  I'm not sure if the IBS is making this worse or if it's just being pregnant but I also have a lot of gas and bloating.  Sometimes it makes me dread eating a meal because after I eat my abdomen feels so full like it could burst or fall off- haha.  Also, because of all the gas and intestinal movement I'm having a hard time telling if I am feeling my baby move or if it's just my tummy troubles.  So, I think I have felt the baby move but I'm still not sure.  I have read on the internet that some people's IBS gets better with pregnancy and some people's gets worse.  I think mine is about the same- possibly a little worse at times.  If your IBS tends to be triggered by hormones-like if you usually have your episodes around time for your period-it may be affected by the hormones fluctuations of pregnancy.  But whether that will be for the better or worse is just an individual case, I think.  Definitely run all your symptoms by your doctor and get their opinion.
