Lol I was wondering the same thing. Its going to be interesting since I'm going to labor in water. Can't have an iv. I don't want one. Give me a cup of water instead I say. Not everyone is dehydrated

they just want to have a line open just in case you need some emergency meds. if you don't need the fluids or whatever then they'll just close it off nd tape it up for when/if you do end up needing it.

Most IV's are put into your arm. If the nurses have a hard time finding the veins in your arms or if the veins collapse, that's when they try it on your hand.

usually when you're admitted to the hospital for any reason, the first step is to administer an IV. especially in l&d. IVs usually start at the lowest part of your arm, being your hand. they will put a numbing med first with a tiny needle nd then do the IV. I've never had a painful IV but I'm also very good with needles nd like to watch them go in lol

An iv can be used for many things, give u fluids or meds are the main reasons during labor. Im not sure if everyone has to get one or not. Nut in my opinion, it hurts less and is less bothersome in ur hand than ur arm. In ur hand, you can still bend ur arms to get comfy.
