Just out of curiosity.. sorry if I sound ignorant

What causes down syndrome on babies? Yesterday I met a couple with 4 beautiful kids.. (going by age) the 1st and the 3rd had down syndrome and the 2nd and 4th didn't.. they were the sweetest kids ever but I got to thinking how come only two have it..NOT that I wish the other two had it or anything but yall get what im trying to ask right? Is it something that you either get or dont get or is it like gene related or passed down? Sorry if I sound ignorant

It's a mutation on a chromosome. Every person has 2 of each (1 from mom, 1 from dad) and sometimes that particular chromosome either doesn't split correctly or it ends up with a 3rd part to it.

This is also the case for the tricomys.  These mutations affect chromosomes 13, 18 and 21.

Yes.... Its caused by the extra chromosome, I have Lil cousin who has down syndrome.. It's a rare thing.... But they are no different from all kids without down syndrome. They are adorable

Its has to do with genes but not like everyone thinks baby ends up developing an extra chromosome... doctors and scientists aren't 100% sure what causes the development of the extra chromosome. They have linked cases of being too young or too old to DS but there's not a lot of proof saying this is the cause ...

The baby will get an extra chromosome from its mother. Its not genetic in the sense that because you have someone in your family with DS that you are more likely to give your child the extra chromosome. It works off of odds. The age of a woman (being too young or too old) do have some factors but is not the only factor. When in doubt, Google it.

I looked it up I was right. It can be from the egg or sperm being formed wrong and having an extra chromosome.

It's due to the baby receiving an extra chromosome. The risk of a child getting it increases the older the mother is.

I don't think it's genetic my great uncle had it and nobody else in our family has it.
But i do think you either get it or you don't.

Idk if its genetic. But I do know its caused by I believe an extra chromosome. Usually people have 21 but with down syndrome they have 22. But if I'm wrong someone should let me know.

They really don't have a cause for it , it's just a 50 50 chance if a child gets it or not ... just like any other disease.

You do not sound ignorant. It's supposed to be a genetic thing or age issue. I'm not tooooo certain though
