Kindergartner/1st grader???

I have a poll in the forum, and want some more info from you ladies with children in K/1st grade, or who remember what their children did in those levels...

This is a quote from my poll:

"When I was in Kindergarten I was learning letters and numbers, playing, napping, learning about weather, colors, things like that. I taught a Kindergarten class in High School for half a semester and these kids didn't pass unless they could write full sentences, that had to be understandable. Not really spelling things correctly, or correct punctuation, but it had to be legible and understandable."

My question is what were your children doing at these levels? What were they being taught?

I currently have one in K and one in 2nd.  I agree with Kla1.  They learn colors, shapes, numbers, counting by 2's and 10's, simple math, reading and many other things.  There are certain sight words they have to know before entering kindergarten, certain numbers, letters and colors etc. Then there are more advanced levels of the same criteria they have to know in order to advance.

Most of these things you can work on with him at home for free...use the internet, there is a WEALTH of resources and printable worksheets you can use for everything from shapes to colors to numbers, letters and reading.  There's really no need to buy fancy stuff or spend tons on pre-k programs.  As long as you have the time and patience for that kind of thing.  I"m fortunate..here in Georgia we have a lottery funded pre-k program through the school systems.  It's not required but I have found it extremely useful.  It not only builds the academic skills necessary for kindergarten but social as well.  It's more lenient than K but it prepares them for the structure and disciplinary techniques in K as well.

I have a child in both K & 1st grade. Last year it was preK & K...and let me tell you K now is like 1 or 2 grade. They do easy stuff in the beginning but at the end they are writing sentences, reading book, adding and subtracting!! It is VERY different from what I member ! But it is a great thing cause they pick up sooo much at these ages and learn so fast.
