Low iron

Has anyone else had slightly low iron but your doctor insists on you taking iron pills. I have been told by people who have taken them that they make you sick and extremely constipated. How could low iron affect my baby? And is it ok if it's just a little low??

They told me the same thing 2 weeks ago. I don't like taking anything while I'm pregnant though, so I changed my diet and added some extra iron rich foods instead.

I asked my doctor because I have to take the iron pills and it could be harmful with the amount of blood you lose during labor. So just take them! They aren't fun.

They made me sick too. My dr just told me to eat more iron filled foods. Red meat and such. If your iron is low during birth you can bleed more. I did with my first pregnancy. Not too bad to be that serious but enough where I just about passed out. Maybe smoothies with high iron fruits and spinach..just research what foods will help that.

Low iron can be very dangrous for you and the baby, the baby will take more and more iron off you the further you go in your pregancy so it's pretty normal to need the tablets, there really is no harm that can come to you by taking them, get one that has vitamin c built in and take them at night before you go to bed, it stops you getting consterpated and if you take it in the morning some foods can stop it working, I have been taking them for years without any issue

I have to take iron pills, but I also use Metamucil. It's a fibre supplement, it works great. That and plenty of water through the day should help with constipation. Maybe take the iron pills for a few weeks with the Metamucil and see if it works for you, if not I'm sure your doctor will have some other options for the constipation.

I'd at least try taking the pills! It can be very dangerous to the fetus and yourself as we'll!
