My case is different with the Metformin.  I had regular periods and I ovulated.  I don't have PCOS.  I am insulin resistant and they thought that caused my eggs to be bad, which in turn caused the miscarriages.  So, I am on the Metformin for that.

I wasn`t diagnoise with diabetes or PCOS my ob.gyn gave this to me to regulate my periods I have 500mg once a day right now.she said it will help for me to concieve easier, since i dont ovulate b,c i dont have periods. i take provera to get my periods going.

she prescribed metformin and provea in Oct.2008 but I was pg so never took the pills. it ended in m.c 11.2008 so i went today b.c still no AF and she told me to take metformin and my AF should come by 1.20.09 and if not to come back in to see her.

Metformin is a diabetic drug and is also given to women with PCOS. If you haven't been diagnosed with PCOS or diabetes you shouldn't take it.

Side effects- nausea and diarrhea are the big ones. Upset stomach, headaches are another. It will probably just make you feel like total crud. I take mine before bed. You doctor should start you out small (500mg) and slowly build you up to whatever works for you. I'm currently on 2000mg. It can make me feel really bad so that's why I take it before bed.

Metformin isn't a fertility drug. It will not get you pregnant any quicker than anything else. BUT it doesn't help prevent miscarriage somehow though science isn't sure how yet. I just had a miscarriage while on Metformin, sadly, so I guess I wasn't on the good side of the statistic.

Basically that is what my doctor had planned...I had a mc last december and then I had crazy cycles for 6 months and that seventh month he was going to have me start the metformin but as you know, I never took it because I was actually pregnant...Good luck!

Thank you both.. for your response. Congrats on your Pregnancies both of you.

sweetangel- I was in the same boat as you. I got the prescrpition right b4 I got my BFP (ended in m.c 11.08) and now my Af hasnt come so my doc. said to start the metformin now and if i didnt start AF by 1.20.09 to make another Appt. and that Metformin will help me and get PG again. is this what ur doc. said to you? Thank you.

Krushing- my doc. said it would regulate my periods so she said start to take it now so when i do get AF I would be regulated and Ovulate most likely.. can i ask how long where u on metformin when u got Pg? Thank you.

I know there are several reasons to take Metformin.  I didn't know it could start your period.  I am on it because in the testing with the RE we found that I am insulin resistant and is probably the cause of my m/c's.  So, I started it and am now working on 20 weeks pregnant with a baby boy.  In my case, RE wanted me to take it the first trimester to help sustain the pregnancy, but when I was released my OB said to stay on it the entire pregnancy to help reduce gestational diabetes too.  When I started mine, it was a gradual thing.  I took 500mg for a week, then 1000mg a week and then 1500mg there on out.  Diarrhea was a common side effect.  So, be sure to eat with it.  I've been on it for 8 months now and it doesn't bother me at all.  It's like I'm not taking anything, because my body has gotten used to it.  Good luck!

I was supposed to start it the month I got my bfp...I saw my doctor about 5 days before my bfp and he wrote me a script BUT told me to wait and see if I was pregnant that cycle because he somehow strangely knew that I was!!!  Anyways, I never took it because I got my bfp...my doctor usually is not a big fan of prescriptions but he said metformin was really great, could be taken for a variety of reasons and he was pleased with its low side effects.  I'm not sure what they were but he felt that most people didn't have any other than positive things like weight loss, controlled insulin...

Good luck!
