Do I have a blighted ovum?

I went for  scan yesterday to 'put my mind at rest' the doctor said. I am 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant. The scan was a vaginal scan and showed a sack, a yolk sack and...nothing else. There was no sign of a fetal pole or heartbeat. The person performing the scan said the scan was showing me to be 5 weeks and she would not expect to see anything at this point. She told me to come back in a week for another scan. However, considering my HCG level was 9300 the night before the scan do things look very bad? Am I going to miscarry a blighted ovum, or is there still hope an embryo will show up and things will be alright?

i think you would only have to worry if... well i was 12 weeks pregnante and the same thing happend to me. but right away i knew something was wrong. i had to get blood tests done and everything else. they told me that they should be able to see the heart beat but they didnt. thats why i had a blited ovum. my doctor said that that kind of things only happens one in a lifetime but.... i think you are fine just wait another week or so. my hormones were off the chart but no baby its wierd and sad. i hope the best for you!

Thanks, that's really put my mind at rest. I'm going to try and think positive, and I'll let you know how it all goes at the next US.

It's very easy to be "off" by up to a week, sometimes even 2 weeks, in early pregnancy. Implantation can take anywhere from 1-2 weeks after fertilization so that's why.

I would rest easy. So far, so good it seems!

i had my first US at what I thought was 5 days 6 days, all they saw was a empty sac measuring less than 5 weeks :( , rescheduled US for May 9th, BUT couldn't wait that long so I went to a diff doctor 6 days later ( past Monday) and the doctor then saw a baby with a heartbeat, so I would not worry to much at this point, and yes my levels were at 9512 at the first US, and the sac still appeared to be empty. I would go back for a second scan in 4-5 days to ease your mind, but mine turned out to be nothing to worry about.... will hope for yours too.... Also it depends on the equipment, when i went Monday at first they still saw a empty sac, but he then sent me to a diff room that had a new US system they had only used 4 times and that was the machine that picked up the baby and heartbeat.... so keep that in mind also

Good luck to you
