I agree with the ladies, dont stress because it is not good for the baby. If you have to do and aminocentisis but I believe that everything will be ok. Just stay positive
I wouldnt stress it. THere are tests they can do to check for it at about 11 weeks or so. Get the testing done, and the ultrasound that they can do at the same time to measure the neck and brainstem, and live worry free. As Joy said above, smoking doesnt effect it. So dont worry so much. And you dont have to stay off here like your bf said to, the women on here are very smart and are a wonderful help and support any time you need it. We are always here for you if ya need us. :-) Relax a bit, take a bubble bath, and keep in touch.
Smoking would have nothing to do with Down. It's a congenital disorder (meaning it'd be because of a genetic abnormality with DNA). And anyway, if you're young, your baby has a less chance of having Down. They can do genetic testing but the only thing that will tell you YES or NO is amniocentesis which carries a risk of miscarriage and can only be done in the first trimester.
Just talk to your doc about it and work something out.
My friend at work is currently pregnant and her husbands sister died at 3 years and she had Downs. She had tests which gave her a very very very small chance of having a Downs baby, so she's not worried.
I know there are some factors of inheritance involved but as for the smoking weed - I have never heard of that to cause Downs (I am not an expert though)
Smoking leads to low birth mass babies according to research and over here there was a story on the News that said lots of younf women were deliberately smoking to lower the birth mass of their babies!! On the up side my Mum smoked when she was pregnant with me and I am mini but I'm reasonably intelligent.
I think - Stop worrying and congratulations on giving up smoking because I know form my Mum that it can be very hard to give up!! I'm sure you can have a test to see what your babies chances of Downs are. I think it's called the triple test.
The best thing to do is not to stress you and the baby. My doc did say that age is a factor when it comes to like down syndrome. As you get farther in pregnancy, they willl offer you a AFP testing that will test for down syndrome and spinal ?( sorry so the life of me I cant think of the second word).
